I've recently been informed you cant recycle orange juice cartons. I've decided to start recycling cardboard like pizza boxes and beer cartons. are we allowed to recycle card board?arty:
hard question if we don't know where you are. OJ cartons are waxed, so they can't go in paperboard recycling. Pizza boxes with grease are iffy. beer boxes and carriers for six bottles are recyclable as cardboard and paperboard (paperboard would also be cereal boxes, in case you put beer on your Wheeties)
Anything that is just cardboard (even greasy pizza box's) you can compost. The thicker it is the longer it takes to break down but you can put it back into your soil. Im not a huge fan of curbside recycling cardboard/newspaper as it takes a lot of energy to transport it to the facility, and then more energy to transform it into something else. If it will degrade over time I toss it in the compost heap.
Africa Unite, I'm sure it's a matter of do we want to keep mining for metals or cutting trees? My compost abilities are limited by a very shady yard. But I buy post-consumer recycled paper, so I feel giving to that stream is beneficial, compared to cutting logger roads, felling trees, trucking those trees to a mill and shipping that paper around. If my habits can require less logging roads and less virgin paper, I'm ok with that for now. there are better answers out there, and I hope we make them economically feasible for this so-called free market economy.
Thats understandable drumminmama not everyone is blessed with a good location for a large compost heap. I understand your point about recycling paper in order to prevent cutting down trees and that is a very valid point. I wasnt trying to put down recycling just trying to offer an alternate use for those greasy pizza boxes if you have the means to cut it up and compost it. If everyone does these little things they'll add up.
