It seems like everyones freakin out whenever you mention so what, who, why, how, when? Are they still touring? whats the attraction? whats it say to you? I seek your divine knowledge :) Over here theres a lot of talk say Crosby, Stills & Nash, Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan. I don't hear about th Grateful Dead.

The Gratefull Dead are no longer the group they were, when Jerry Garcia died it left just the band, The Dead Band, they do still tour and some of the members occationally will sit in with another group and play. They have a great following that are called the Dead Heads.

I'm sure someone else has more details

    Bright Blessings

I think the detail is they just got really really old and boring about 50 years ago even before they formed a group I dont think the grateful dead were ever the group they were hyped up to be - just some middle of the road guys with guitars that had a wierd group name - nothing actually that innovative or surprising about their music even when they were first on the scene. even, steve davis was more interesting - and for a laugh they called him Steve "interesting" Davis

Wow, you got your facts wrong. The Grateful Dead always had a huge following by fans and playing more shows than you can ever think of. Had a couple thousand songs. Shows ALWAYS SOLD OUT. I followed the dead in my early teens, so I seen alot. There music still lives on with Phil Lesh doing his thing singing dead tunes, Bob Weir/Ratdog doing solid sets of dead tunes. Both are always sold out. There's also the Jerry Garcia Band still playing. And Dark Star Orchrasta is a cover DEAD band that has a huge following, and is mostly sold out.I could keep goin!!! This kind of post pisses me off. I just got done with my Ratdog run- 3shows in NY. , 2 in PA.:) IMO it was a solid run with some killer shows. We even drove in 12"-18" of snow to get to penns peak in PA for 2 days of shows. The music of THE GRATEFUL DEAD will always be heard.:jester:

I agree, the day jerry died was the day everyone in the dead died just a little themselves.:(

Straight facts: GD toured/ played from 65 (as the Warlocks, originally) to 95. Garcia died right after that. Decision was made at that time to retire the name. Ratdog (bob Weir) and Mystery Box (Mickey Hart) joined with a couple other acts (including Hot Tuna, old friends of theirs) and created the Furthur Festival in 1998.

(Furthur was the manifest on Kesey's bus, and memorialized in a song called That's it for he Other One, hence the name -although some say Pig and Jerry had a band with that name in '64) T
he Other Ones earned the nickname the Cluttered Ones, as well.
Since then, most of the band has pulled togeter with various guitarists to be simply The Dead (no Grateful) came out in 03-04.

MY opinion (and opinions are like armpits: everyone has a couple and they tend to stink):

I'm thinking that Phil's taking a break this year (he recently battled cancer. He says he's feeling good, but in 98 he had a liver transplant, so he needs to take care of himself.)

Lots of speculation about power struggles in the members. It isn't my place to say, but when I last talked with Bobby, he was looking serene and happy. (I have a dear friend in Ratdog).
Been a long hard road for some heads finding Life after Dead, but there's plenty of music bringing down that vibe from whatever realm in which it hides.
The Phishkids* are getting a taste of it now, but without the luxury of a definite signal of change.

*a term I learned from Kesey. Go bitch to his grave.

Why not just listen to their music yourself and then you can be the judge. I mean yes they sold out stadiums because good live music requires improvisation.

I mean the fact is most bands today are built for radio while the Dead were built
for live performance. I don't see many rock bands today that book Giants stadium for two nights in a row and sell out both.

Wow thats a lotta stuff, Thanks very much I like to hear from the fans and get an understanding of what it means I always think a band is as good as its fan base how ever big or small its how much they get behind it :)
