I just found this at our local Costco... I've been using Smart Balance, but this was MUCH cheaper! (and gluten-free & vegan!) Does anyone know if you can bake with it?!? It works well on our pancakes & such, but I'm wondering if anyone's done any baking with it yet or if I should just experiment. love, mom
I think its similar to smart balance.. my family gets both and I use them both to cook and stuff. It should say on the tub if you can bake and cook with it, I'm pretty sure you can though.
mama, yes, you can. I'd compare the price to Spectrum Naturals' no transfat vegetable shortening, though. I make an awesome vegan lime-coconut "bread" with EB.
I use Smart balance organic... It tastes great either with pasta or on any dish that would require butter....
also, yes, it's fine for baking...although it's not hydrogenated so if your recipe calls for crisco you may need to use crisco instead. However, smart balance is perfect in place of butter.
I think anyone at all concerned about health should toss Crisco out in the trash. Spectrum's non Hydro is perfectly fine, if you don't want the buttery taste.
Yeah really, hydrogenated food is baaaaaaaaaaaaad for you! I would just supstitute the healthy stuff and it will probably come out fine
Ooh, wonderful Thanks so much! Yeah, we tossed Crisco out years ago. I'll have to check out Spectrum too - don't know if I've seen that brand around here, but I guess I'd stopped looking after finding one good "butter" that I can bake with. love, mom
Earth balance is vegan crack. It works in everything I have tried it in and I love it love it love it. Cookies, cake, sauces, soups, everything.
Spectrum's will be in a large resealable container much like margarine. It is shelf stable, so I find it near baking goods,m esp vegan choc chips. http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=87 for a label look. eta: note that palm oil is fully saturated and therefore shuould be used sparingly. EB is 3 percent of daily allownce of sat fat, If I remeber the label right. Do check.
