After you become more familiar with the restless state of you nervous system, you settle down to wait for what will come. In about one hour, you begin to notice an extraordinary change in you state of consciousness. At first you seem rather confused, according to common sense standards. People ask you questions and you answer dreamily. You often feel that things are extraordinarily clear. You become alert and very sensitive to minute changes. You say: "I see! Now I begin see," awed by revelation. Or if you are writing down your thoughts, you are reduced to translating the material of consciousness, which you cannot put into worlds, into mutilated metaphors or familiar analogies to describe that binding clarity. You find that it has no counterpart in ordinary clear sensorium fed only by the trickles of common sense. Later, looking back from normal, less dilated consciousness, you remember that during the entire experience, you suspend ordinary logic without missing it. You felt given a refreshing a refreshing rest. You enchant yourself with the airy thought that the experience has an odd logic of its own but it is quite enough to let it flood your brain and leave the question of whether your consciousness is clear or clouded to others. Now your senses seem to take in more sight and sound. The eye becomes a camera with an automatic zooming lens. It rushes up for close, almost microscopic vision. And then your eye sends you strange messages that make you wonder. What if everything is alive? You seem an animistic world living, walls inhaling, oil painting with muscles moving under the canvas. You endow these animated things with a conscious personality. You see the hedge breathing. It swells and subsides with a regular inhalation and expulsion of breath, calmly, contentedly. And suddenly you feel involved with life everywhere. You can't even light a cigarette in a detached way. Your perceptions are stretched before you can adjust to any illusions you have been seeing. You may feel ravenously hungry but your appetite is taken away or distracted by the birds outside singing to derange your senses. The sounds you should HEAR, you begin to see and touch, as if all you senses were on a single antenna. You can touch sound, and conduct the tempo of the breathing walls. You move your hands to the music and are moved to speak aloud. You stop, astonished, for you gesturing hand is entangled with your words. The words become a gesture, gestures graceful and gradual. Now wherever your eye falls on the resplendent world it seems to be a gathering of senses. You swear that you have seen the most beautiful sight ever seen by anyone on earth or anywhere. But you say this again of other signs. The designs were formal, symmetrical and exquisitely perfect but drawn in jeweled illuminated colors like melted melted precious stones. They formed patterns, which dissolved swiftly to be replaced by other patterns, scintillating transparencies, like filaments of amethysts and emeralds. And the light from within shines with such luminosity that you become overwhelmed by the beauty. As you watch this show, you may lose all track of time. A new vista opens up all in a moment and while you feast upon it, time stands still. You have a feeling of nowness. There is no past or future. This moment, this ecstasy is the only time you are alive. Happiness is not something to be experienced sometime in the future. It is now. You are so aware of this precious moment, you feel it will pass. You make a sad comment on times revenge. Time would pass and it would all end. In one of those minutes, an infinity of extraordinary events, lives and stories could be going on. Clock time is irrelevant. You are involved in a larger cosmic time, which tells you that in a flash you can see all. Your mind may be flooded with all these vibrations, visions, and flaming jewels, so that you may not be able to handle simple abstractions. You not only couldn’t tell time, you may not concentrate on any assignment. Suddenly the meaning of the universe becomes clear, but you cannot make meaning from a proverb. It is a small insignificant question when you are synthesizing all the great paradoxes of cosmology. You begin to lose you inhibitions but you feel no compulsion to do anything bizarre. You don’t want to be distracted but you are compliant. Someone asks what kind of music would you like to hear. You answer that it really makes no difference at all. Who has ten symphonies of colored chords detonating in his head? You can be moved around without interrupting your view of vision. Of all the big changes you notice, the change in self-concept and body image is most immense. You feel at first no definite sharp location of yourself. This you, which stands outside yourself, shows no rigid shape. You feel dissociated and removed. Things, yourself, feel strange. You may see yourself writ large. You suddenly find yourself about fifteen feet tall looking down at your feet, which seem a long way away. You may take new pleasure in your body as if seeing a stranger. You feel able to step out of the rented costume of the self you held rigidly within narrow bounds. When the visions are flowing, you actually see the things you describe. But when the transcendent feelings flow, you want to describe unity, illumination, revelation, rebirth and exaltation. Then you are reduced to finding the most fantastic phrases to evoke the nonevocable. It is as if you saw a new color, one outside the band of the spectrum people normally see. You would need to use old words in wild ways. Or invent a new word, which communicates only to those who have seen your new color. It didn’t come to you via logic but though direct contact, as if it sprouted within you in a class by itself. The world seemed right. LSD brings out a feeling of warmth, goodness, love, benevolence, laughter, great grinning at everything as if my personality were a Cheshire cat, all disappeared except this uncontaminated smile.
