It's a very sad music state we live in these days, what would be the word to describe the 00's? comercial pop? personally i'm a very big hip-hop fan, but as a true lover to music i can always apreciate any good form [-country] of music, and i listen to more music in a month then most probably listen to in a year anyways, in the last 2-4 months i've been heavilly listening to the "popular" music during the mid 90's, ie. Smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, even No Doubt all these groups and artists made music THEY LIKED, they made music they had an intense passion for, they werent comercialized robots making music through computers These artists were simply making the music they loved, and it just so happened people liked it these days i dont even know what new music is, besides odd house soungs my large album collection is mainly made up of material before 99
Indeed. There are still lots of people making the music they like, and doing a pretty good job of it in my opinion. I'm not saying all mainstream is crap or something, I just don't seem to dig most music on the radio and tv. I don't dig most hip hop neither. I found myself listening to a lot of nowadays bands, almost as much as to pre-nineties music, but I agree with you that the mainstream music industry is fucked up.
look harder to what? i'm not gonna dig around with shitty underground music to look through hundreds of artists to find 1 good one i'm talking about MAINSTREAM music, no one in todays scene has what the people in the 90's did
Not in mainstream music, no. But bands like No doubt and Nirvana (don't know about the Smashin pumkins to be honest) are of course also commercialized. The mainstream music industry just seem to have more interest in easy money then ever before, and sometimes throw the occasional retro band in the charts, like the Darkness. Ah well, I don't know why they keep the mainstream so shitty. I don't have to dig through hundreds of bad underground bands to find one good one though.
True, but I'm sure you understand what I ment. Nothing wrong with wanting your record to be sold, of course. But it shouldn't be the most important thing for a band.
what about local music - round buffalo i'm diggin on New Clear Fusion, Rod Nixon Project, and Jony James Blues Band. support the musicians in your community
Music today doesn't suck, and it's not all commercialized pop. And it's not hard to find good independent acts... seriously, this forum would be a good place to start. Plus, there are countless music blogs (with downloads!) all about indie/underground artists. And even in the mainstream, there are good artists to be found. Most people love past decades because everyone forgets all of the bad and mediocre bands. I love the '60s, but c'mon... there was a ton of corporate shit then, too. And what's wrong with making digital music on a computer? Bad rap artists who make lame beats have given digital music a bad name, but people can be extremely creative and original with a MacBook these days. Haha, and if you're against digital music, why is your username digitalldj?
I sort of agree with digitalldj, altough there are still some good bands and I don't really listen to hip-hop. Many good bands from the 90's and before are still around as well as some new ones. My favorite major "post-00" bands are Audioslave and Institute. I love most rock from most eras, but I do think perhaps rock is going through a bit of a dry spell lately. There are some good local bands near me, too.
nowadays it seems to me, at least, that people are just making music just to make more money, but that is more towards random celebrities like paris hilton and lindsay lohan. but then you just got random stuff that people enjoy because it's on trl or something. i don't know, i haven't found too much of today's music worth buying their cds. i'll just stick with my beatles, heh.
Although I do love the 90's bands I agree w/ Lucifer, there are alot of great indie/underground bands out there...you just have to search & find something you like. It's great that with technology nowdays any band can post a video/ audio and put their music out for everyone to hear.
Exactly. Of course, that means that there's TONS of shit out there, but it also means that there is a huge amount of good music coming from bedroom musicians that you never could have heard in the '90s.
Some people won't search or even make the attempt. I guess it depends on how deep you are into music and it's variety of artist and whether you make your own judgement on the music itself (like it or not) or if you take someone else's word that a band is good or not. But yeah, i agree that it was harder to achive noteriety in the 90's, and thereIS alot of great music out there. If someone say's there isn't, they're just not looking.
i have to agree with you dj, iv been listening to alot of rock music from the 90's, with some hip hop thrown in now and again. i like how alot of these bands may have been "mainstream", but they just didnt give a shit if they made lots of money or not, they just wanted to have fun and make music.
a list of good modern mainstream artists - radiohead sufjan stevens gomez the cure fionn reagen ben folds the strokes arctic monkeys etc etc etc. there will always be something original and interesting in mainstream music.
