I respect peoples' decision to eat meat or not eat meat. I just wonder how many vegetarians are careful not to wear leather, or use any animal products. I think everyone should do what they feel is right for them. I just don't like hypocrits, and I hope that vegetarians follow their beliefs to the fullest.

Also...I don't understand how some people claim to be vegetarian and yet, they eat fish (or poultry) as if they weren't animals. Are there any people on these forums who do this?

I confess that I wear leather birks, but I doubt that I am contributing to animal suffering by doing so. I probably buy a new pair about once every two years. I don't wear leather jackets or have leather in my car. I tried the synthetic birks on, but I thought they felt shitty.

and no, I don't eat fish or poultry, or any type of byproduct (gelatin, etc.)

Ugh...I know so many people who tell me that poultry isnt meat. *strangles*....i think its the whole catholic thing. I'm horrible with religions, but I think for awhile they aren't suposed to eat any meat at all, except they eat fish and chicken because it isnt considered meat in their eyes or something. Anyway, I do own a few leather things. I try not to buy any, but its hard in certain cases. I have a suede jacket that used to belong to my dad when he was my age, and he passed it down to me. I really love it for mostly sentimental value. I also have a pair of birkenstocks and sanuk sandals. other than that, I dont own any other leather things, unless I pruchased them before going veggie..

    Totally agree with you :)

I have a couple of leather things from BV (before veg*an) but don't buy anymore. And avoid other animal products with varying degrees of ease.
Ended up having to take gelatin coated pills recently. Of course I had to purchase and open the packet to find this out. Then had the catch 22 of take them and feel like crap (mentally) or not take them and feel like crap (physically)

I also avoid animal tested products, something of a struggle. It helps to have understanding folks, but mine aren't really. Apparently rabbits in labs and the one in our garden are diffrent and don't warrant the same rights. For no logical reason. Damn annoying family, at least the rabbit's vegan.

"the whole catholic thing"? <- yes, there's something about "clean" and "unclean" animals..i guess that's what you might be talking about? although i don't agree with it considering i'm veggie..lol

and i don't accept any animal clothing and such while being vegetarian..i have old leather belts which are probably going to be donated to goodwill or something considering i haven't worn them since i turned vegetarian. i look at my shoes before buying them, i look at shampoos, make-up, etc

although i'll be honest because i do sometimes make mistakes...

I'm so glad i read this thread... I've been searching for a new pair of shoes for aaaaaggges now and everytime i find something i remotely like the look of, i turn it over and there are the words "genuine leather" shining up at me ever so proudly, like it's a privilege to own something that's "genuine" corpse skin. blech! So anyways, i've been feeling the consumer pressure to cave and just buy a pair and pretend it's faux, but now i'm thinkin more clearly! So thanks!

    NAMASTE

I am Vegan but still have a pair of leather boots that i wear at winter time.Other than that i do not buy leather in any form.I found a company that i will be going threw for my hemp boots.Took awile to find one but ran accross them a day ago. Some things take time with people from there diet to what they will dress in.Buying organic hemp or cotton is not cheap or is the foot wear. But with more and more people making the change over the prices should drop so any one can afford to buy it.Till then it is sad but many vegi heads in alot of areas have not the outlets to find or buy kind foot wera.Knowing this and the high prices i feel as long as you try you are doing more than most.

I play football (american football) and i bought leather shoes for it before i was a vegetarian but i think it would be really hard to find non-leather football shoes

If I own anything leather, then I don't know about it. I do not think leather is right to own if you are a vegetarian, unless you had it before you became one, or if you really and truly didn't know it was leather.

some people are vegetarian for the health benefits of being such and have no philosophical reasoning behind their choice in diet. I know this is a minority, but it is there. Also, let's face it many women LOVE shoes, haha ;)

Well vegetarianism is dietary, so wearing leather is not procluded. Of course it's morally at odds with vegetarianism, but then so are a lot of other things.

Personally, I think it's productive to spend more time recognising people for what they achieve rather than criticising them for what they fail to achieve.

I wear pleather sandals, but when its clod i wear leather clogs that i bought a long time ago before i was a vegan, so i don't think it's wrong to wear, because it's either i put them to some use, or just waste em and buy something else...I would never buy leather products now though.

    Peace and Love,
    Dan

yeah exactly. I still wear the same leather shoes I got for my 12th birthday (8 years ago in October), I will wear them till they fall apart, same with all the other leather shoes I own.
I don't buy new leather, but my old stuff is too crappy for the 2nd hand store, and I don't want to throw it out(because I am concerned for the enviroment as well as the animals). So yeah, I'll wear it until I can't anymore, and one day I will be leather free..

i think use of leather products is ok as long as you really use it to its fullest and dont squander the animal's life that was sacrificed for your product. personally i own a leather belt which is in its fifth year, boots which followed me through norway and then alaska and others places and are basically worn through now, and a pair of birks. you just gotta be real concious and thoughtful to what went into it and never be wasteful

i have a pair of pumas that i wear when needed, and my shoes for school are leather, but they're the only shoes i have that i wont get in trouble for, and theyre falling apart (insides are coming out) i refuse to buy any more pairs of leather shoes, however, for PE she says i need tennis shoes (i didnt bring shoes today cause i dont have any tennis shoes) but i'm not about to buy leather.

I am vegetarian, not Jain. I attempt to limit the amount harm I inflict upon the universe. I am under no illusion that I have eliminated it. I've yet to find comparable nonleather goods so my sandals are leather and so is my belt. If I ever eat either, you are free to say I am not a vegetarian. For the record, automobiles are one of the leading causes of animal deaths yet I've yet to see anyone ask how many vegetarians here drive a car?
