and i may have gotten my mother-in-law in an uncomfortable situation. so one of brenda's doctor's that she works with moved here from new york. and i asked her how she's finding the southwest, and she says "it's pretty, but there's no culture here." and i went off. that fucking pisses me off, though i didn't start yelling, i'm happy to say. i said "so, what you're saying is if it's not broadway or a northern european art collection, comes with a big price tag and an excuse to dress up formally, it's not culture?" she says "well, i'm just not fond of the southwestern style." and i said "it's not style, it's CULTURE." fucking bitch.
yeah, goddammit! those girls at foxtails work HARD for their dollars. but there's so much fascinating shit out here, it takes forever to go through it all. it's basically an outdoors oriented culture. native art, fairs, music festivals, those ancient pueblos and wondering where the hell all the anasazi went, ufo symposiums, camping, skiing, hunting, and yeah, in albuquerque, if you like, there's ballets and opera's that come to town. just because some bitch doesn't particularly LIKE the culture here doesn't mean that there's no culture here.
Here in Florida, we gots lots of funerals, all sorts of different kinds of them - it is one big party really.
i remember watching a really cool funeral in new orleans when i was little. i always wanted to have one like that. band marching along, people singing and dancing, getting drunk. awesome. i'm trying very hard to make sure people are happy to see me go. i think i'm doing really well with my efforts, too.
If you ever make it out of the desert, you'll know what she means. I don't agree with the ladies attitude (I'd poke her in the eye), but I can see where she's coming from.
uh, i'm not from here. i moved here from the coast. i think the place is fascinating and varied in it's cultural offerings. "make it out of the desert?" this place is what i've been looking for. it's culture isn't totally based on formal wear and actors.
How can you have a culture in a place with an accent other than New Yawker? Everyone knows that the southern accents come from a complete lack of culture and intelligence. Also, the thousands of years of indian culture don't count because indian men often wear their hair long and are therefore a bunch of damn hippies. Everyone knows that culture was invented in western Europe and migrated to California and New York after WWII. What were you thinking KC? Apologise at once and buy her a $20,000 painting to make amends. And always remember to assume a submissive posture when in the presence of cultured people, their appreciation of expensive shit demands it!
maybe if i ever get out of the desert (geez, i just got here) i'll remember that. my dad is from new york, too. he was forever taking us to one symphony and play after another. it's great, sure, i like to dress up, too. but for heaven's sake, if americans would get their heads outta their asses and actually get curious instead of looking down on anything that doesn't cost a ton of money, they'd find ALL KINDS of fascinating shit. people are interesting everywhere.
and another thing! just because it's in america doesn't mean it's not cultural!!! grrr..... you wouldn't go wandering around with mongolians, watching them do all their shit and say "it's not cultural!" jeez.
I'd say she's an idiot to go to New Mexico in search of the city life....what did she expect?! There are plenty of *ancient* cultures that fascinate me there, plus the incredible natural beauty......I guess there is no upper west side of farmington and she just found out. Anyway, its not like someone is inherently more cultured or intelligent because of where they came from. Some Spainish girl in NYC was telling my wife how much "better " it was there than in their home town of Barcelona and how it wasn't worth her time to go back and visit...my wife was pissed
Taos NM has the most wondrfull galeries I have ever seen. Besides Georgia OKeefe is from NM and she is one of my favorite artists. Tell this snobby bitch to stick her manolo stilettos up her ass.
I know what you mean I, personally, am a paragon of culture *sniffs right armpit and looks around for the remote*
well you know, she just hasn't even made an effort to learn about the region and the people here. she was too busy looking down her nose at everything and everyone. and it's not just art galleries and stuff like that, but everything else people do around here as a part of living and making their way. it's so fascinating and different from the urban societies.
Well, I lived awhile in Colorado. And I've done some traveling in the west. I'd say the SW is eat up with culture.
