so i'm 17 and into the "hippie" thing. my dad was a hippie, and i've inherited all his music, books (tim leary and ram dass etc.). I am totally immersed in these new ideas and the music really speaks to me, im all about conciousness exploration and so forth. but one thing i've been thinking about is that maybe my following the "hippie" way of my parents is actually fairly anti-hippie. hippies were about new ideas, new art new everything. out with the old in with the new. and i, rather, am just repeating things that happend a long time ago. rather than looking forward to a new band or whatnot, i am more nostalgic- wishing i had been at woodstock etc. but, i figure, if i actually LIVED in the 60s/70s, maybe i would have been the type wishing i could have been to a sinatra show. At the same time, the new movements today are really shallow, and devoid of any new ideas in science, life or art. in fact, a lot of it is violent. but i can't stop wondering if my long hair and tye dye is just repetition. i ask you old hippies this question because back then, it was YOU who were rebelling against your parents and authority and found the hippie way yourself. i almost fell like a fake having parents who jsut gave it to me, and accepting it passively.
First of all..welcome. I'm so happy to see another younger person here, exploring where their path is taking them. How wonderful that you have been given gifts that make you wonder and question. Take them in the spirit that they came to you in. Sweetie, you do know the answers....now you are figuring out the questions....your questions will take you where you need to go to learn what you need to learn. Be open to it. As long as you are being your true aware self then there can be nothing fake. We are sent people, places, things and feelings to help us on our way, be aware of the gifts in your life and give thanks. By living your life in your way and in your time, you cannot go wrong. It is a learning experience. Soak it all in, take what you need and leave the rest. Find your passion and live in it. If you don't know what your passion is, then search out what you take joy in and your passion will come. Ask questions, there are many helpful souls here, teepi
just repeating things that happend a long time ago Aren't we all.Don't worry about it just put thought into what you repeat and be true to yourself.Hippies aren't being copied their being reborn.
I have looked at that a lot since coming to Hip forums specially when I read about people having missed Woodstock and the sort. I think it's good that you follow your parents in their interest about gurus and things that never grow old or unnesessary, like protesting about an unjust war and liking music with great meaningful lyrics and great chord changes. The sixties were a decade of various revolutions going on at once and great pioneers in many areas. It was really a people's era, and births of real wakefulness for those who got aboard that plane. I talked to people in Spain where the Beatles never had an effect in their lives or those who never saw Star Wars. The world undergoes mental and spiritual revolutions but you have to surrender something in order to gain something else. For some... national pride is more important, for others racial identification, and even others, their sexual identity. These pride blocks them from accepting the new because it did not come from someone of their "kind". True revolution is freedom from that kind of limiting ego. Hipculture is no more a possesion of people in their 50's than it is of kids in their teens. If it belongs to one more than the other then, it is not the real Hip culture, or at least not the one that I like identifying with. Being Hip to me, is and was being free from country, pride, sexual gender, or any other label and freeing yourself from the blocks that keep you from accepting the great pearls that Mankind produces, be that great songs, movies, books, yoga systems, or what may come. For me personally it took me a while to accept computers and the internet, yet I knew nothing about it, but with a little help from strangers and friends I saw the right time, and I jumped in, and now I see it's a great benefitial and useful tool and it can do a lot if used well. What would I have won by putting it down as an evil thing?. What purpose does prejudice serve? It only narrows the mind and limits the person's growth. The straight and narrow road is the path of heart, and that heart cannot be closed at any time; it must remain alert and lucid. It's not easy, but it's worth all the effort put into it. The broad and open road is where most of the people dwell, but it gets more and more painful and desperate because it does not include the present, it is not alive, it clings to old and useless patterns of thought, and It does not LISTEN. End of hip sermon.
I wanted to say that i think its wonderful that you can relate while still being concious of your own individuality... most 17 year olds try so hard to be unique that they end up conforming! I wanted to say a few other things but Teepi and Hari covered most of the points that came to mind... Just follow your heart, Love and your spirit will shine with its own glow! Jah Love
