there's a thread about them in the psychedelic and garage forum it's got a couple pages of people's comments on them as a band, and the band members individually
Jack Bruce - average bassist with a horrible tone, good singer Eric Clapton - poor guitarist with a terrible tone Ginger Baker - good drummer (for his time) 'Fresh Cream' - crap album 'Disraeli Gears' - has its moments 'Wheels Of Fire' - has its moments 'Goodbye' - only made for money Not a big fan at all, to be honest.
Lol, I have 'Slowhand', 'Best Of Cream', 'August', 'Journeyman', 'Ocean Boulevard', 'Bluesbreakers', 'Cream of Clapton'. That's enough to say that he is way overrated and belongs in an above-average pub-band. He even said that 'in every village in the world, there is a kid who can play guitar better than me."

The point of those albums isn't for Clapton to impress people with his technical ability; it's about the songs. Besides, Just because he said that, does that mean he sucks? I've also heard he's said that Trey is the best guitarist in the world. So have you listened to any of his live music? How bout the Layla jam sessions?
He isn't a poor guitarist, but put him up against the like of SRV, Hendrix, Buckethead, Beck, EVH, Healey, Moore, Page, Vai, Duffy, Marr, Zappa, Hammett, Dimebag etc and I'm afraid he looks very poor. If you like Clapton, that's fine, but I've heard loads of his stuff and I am of the opinion that he is the most overrated guitarist ever.
All right then, name me a song. 'Layla', 'White Room', 'Those Were The Days', 'Beautiful Tonight', or whatever. I'll do my best.
Clapton always changes his mind about who is the best. He's gone from Robert Johnson to Jimi Hendrix to Duane Allman to SRV, so it wouldn't surprise me if that were true. Technical ability? When did I mention that? I absolutely love David Gilmour, but he's hardly a virtuoso in terms of speed and complexity, is he? I've found that most of these 'virtuosos' can't even play a simple piece (e.g. Paul Gilbert trying to play 'Purple Haze', and failing dismally) and their solos are just scales and sweeped arpaeggios. I prefer Clapton over most technical players anyday, because he has soul. I just strongly dislike his music and find it boring. I've seen a lot of his live stuff on youtube. Nothing special, apart from his slower version of 'Cross Road Blues' by Robert Johnson, which I really like.
First of all, does it honestly matter who is the best guitarist? There is no such "best" anyway, as everyone's opinion on the matter will differ from one another. Music is not about who is better than who. Second of all, how could anyone consider Eric Clapton a poor guitarist? Even if you find his music to be dull and boring, calling him a poor guitarist shows ignorance about his music, in my opinion.
No, I think you'll find that I said that he is poor compared to the true great guitarists e.g SRV, Buckethead, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour etc, because he is. I don't much care for technique (although the guitrists I like tend to be virtuosos anyway) and I've said that Clapton is better than shredders because he puts emotion into his music, but I still think that he is shockingly overrated.
