I backcombed my hair last friday and i LOVE the way my dreads turned out. Something im having a problem with is keeping the roots tight. I have to rebackcomb them like 4 times a day or my hair ends up looking straight with knotty ends. I refuse to band it and refuse to use wax and i know i probably just need to give them time but is there any way to help them tighten up quicker?

[IMG]Heres a picture of them about 2 days after i backcombed

just leave it be. dreads take a lot of time. yours are like still not even born yet. they are still in the fetus stage if you will.

stop "rebackcombing". just keep them clean and let them be.
    it takes patience.

i take my dread by the root (about half an inch or an inch up) and "grind" it into my head in a circular motion (clockwise). it totally tightens them all up :)

Other than washing, just leave them alone. You will be much happier with the end result.

yeh I agree. stop backcombing, you'll damage the hair too much and it could cause breakage later on. If you're really concerned, and have to look neat for a certain occasion (job interview, etc) you could pull the loose frizz back into the dread with a skinny crochet hook. It wont last but its a quick fix if you REALLY have to.

backcombing only cultivates dreadlocks, it allows you control over how they form, but they will unravel and know up on their own. every time you "rebackcomb" you are bringing yourself back to square one. If you want to speed it up..........the only thing I can think of is a time machine.

You may be temporarily tightening them, but your also breaking your hair and making it more likely that you'll "dread shed" in the future.
