it seems like no matter what i do i can't tone my tummy. help! and it's way worse at night after i've eaten food and had lots to drink all day.. it totally expands and this drives me crazy! but even when i wake up it's flat for the most part but i've got a little belly still that i want to tone... crunches don't seem to really do much.. what do i do? are there certain foods that contribute to this or that could help reduce this?? any ideas are appreciated!!

I've been recently using a stability ball and it has seemed to help my stomach/abs very much so.

First of all, stop eating late at night. That's the worst possible time to eat. Secondly, aerobic exercise works best. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose the weight. Abdominal fat is the easiest fat to lose. It just takes patience.

Targeting the abdominal muscles won't do much until you lose the abdominal fat. You might gain muscle mass, but you won't lose the weight.

I know. I had a pretty big gut until I started to exercise. I have lost 20 lbs since I started exercising in late November. I spend 45 minutes on the eliptical everyday and have found that this works well in losing weight.

If you don't feel crunches, your not doing them right. I use a stability balls now too, since floor crunches don't do shit for me. I've noticed improvement after only a couple of days after no improvement over a couple of months of 'normal crunches'.

threadmil does it for me. half an hour a day. I try to run as much of it as I can. Me and my boyfriend do that and wight train together, except he takes the treadmil lightly (usually a light walk) and focuses almost completely on weights, while I do both with the same enthusiam. I've lost over 15 pounds in 3 months and he's only lost about half of that, if even that.

So definitely focus on cardio, followed by crunches or toning exercises. As you lose the fat, your start to see the frame you've been working on all this time underneath. Just don't expect to see it til you shrink up, and then be happy when you see how much you've done thats just been hiding underneath all of that fat! but most importantly don't give up.

You will see results if you stick with it, just not as quick as you may hope.

    Good article. :)

I just wanted to add to what I said earlier a few things... one, regular crunches didn't really do shit for me either- and I was doing them right but I was doing only crunches and expecting results- kidna silly.

Now I have results that have been amazing me over and over again and what I do is aerobic excercise (which is important for losing any fat, including in the stomach area, of course) 6 or 7 days a week (I walk, do some kickboxing, jog, as well as other excercises), I eat a healthy diet and I use the stability ball for 30-45 minutes 3 or 4 times a week. I find it really targets areas (especially in the abs) extremly well and does a great job and toning AND even burning calories and fat... because the workouts I do with it are just that, workouts, - I'd say they are a light form of cardio itself.

And one more thing when targeting the abs, you have to make sure you are doing the excercises correctly. Sounds simple but it isn't always so much.

(I know a lot of this was just reiterating in my own words things that article said... But yes, a combination and doing things correctly is the key)
