in real life i swear 10 to the dozen because its cool and makes me appear a stronger more socially real person. In this forum I usually advocate tollerance and humanity but in real life i am actually a gangster who would break peoples knee caps for owing me £50 for too long

In short what I write and what i am like in real life is different.
so shouldnt writers make it a duty to act as they would in the real world but in fiction

Probably depends on the story and style.I can relate to what you are saying tho--there's a large disconnect or dichotomy in my personality too.Mine swings from jackass to spiritual.I guess it depends on the characters and their situations."They " say'write what you know".It seems like if one were to write a rough story about bustin' some kneecaps with cussing and nastiness, there would have to be some other characters who would never do such a thing ,maybe even be horrified by it,to keep some balance.By the way ,have you seen 'Naked',by Mike Leigh?

I wonder if it's in the nature of the sheep to know that it is being cared for to be led to the slaughter, or maybe it just doesn't care:)

depends absolutely and entirely upon if and how it fits into the context of the rest of the story, just like anything and everything else. everything that exists in all the endless diversity of existence belongs in every story it is logicly a part of.

i think its totally silly to throw in something that's unrelated to what's going on, and equally much so to leave out, except as a shortcut, anything that is.

i mean, you can suspend disbelief, or you can censor life. take your pick. if you do one you won't be doing the other.

personaly i prefer to suspend disbelief, as i'm sure many if not most of us on here do. not everyone does of course, so to each their own.

my self personaly, in real life, if i use a 'foul oath' it is either to emphasise a point, or to express that i'm really pissed off. so i can't think of any good reason i would do so more often in a story. or less. if the situation really called for it.

I think swearing works in some books. I'm currently reading Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, and it has quite a bit of swearing in it. Normally, I would be offended by it slightly, but it seems to work really well in this book. I think its only normal to swear and sometimes it is necessary.

"Omg! A comet is hurtling toward my head! I am so startled!"

    doesn't really seem to work.

Oh and sentinent - are you serious about breaking people's kneecaps or were you being sarcastic? You sounded sarcastic...I also love your little signature :D Heehee

Hey great start to a story - once upon a fucking time there were two right little bastards called hansel and gretel, who had no regard whatso fuckin ever for other peoples property

No, have you seen Mike Leigh, naked??

My real opinion is that I wish books didnt have to be too realist, super-real so that adults could enjoy stories about the world now but where the characters dont swear - everyone now in britain swears = except old cunts - and churchgoers

Swearing can be used to depict a certain reality. It becomes a problem when it's used as a gimmic.

why is this even a question?

whatever is approriate to the story should be used
    whatever isn't; shouldn't

the Little Mermaid shouldn't be goin 'I wish I could kill Ursula and skullfuck her with her own tentacles'
nore should a druggie be saying 'godalmighty that is some good stuff!'

Why not? I mean how old is the little mermaid? Over here in Britain, 12 year olds will tell you to fuck off or theyll shit in yer brain
I think kids arent reading as many books as its not real enough. In my experience its adults who try to refrain from swearing and kids who delight in it

"Oh my princess, what the fucking hell has that bastard stepmother of yours done to you"?
"Oh princey prince take me away from here so those tossers cant hurt me anymore"
    See thats much more real

As long as it isnt gratuitous, it can be quite effective.

I find people who use constant profanity a little tiresome
tbh.....it would be one thing that would turn me off a guy...
may lead me to think that he was "stuck" for other words

Of course used skillfully it can be quite amusing....

...and during sex I find it most appropriate
    :)

If ever you come to the smoke let me know and I will drive you crazy by whispering sweet expletives in your ear all day long.
