    hey!
i know most of you have used aloe vera before for your dreads, and i was wanting too also, mainly for scalp. but here's the prob. i went hunting for some, and all i found was a bottle that said "Aloe Vera 100% Gel". i'm thinking, is it 100% aloe vera, or 100% gel..hahahaha...so here's what the ingredients are, just wondering what you guys think(i only quetion it because i heard the rule of thumb on this situation is that if you can't pronounce the ingredients, they don't need to be in your dreads..lol)

Aloe Vera Gel, Triethanolamine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer 940, Tetrasodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea

    thanks everybody^^

Ok, my gel only says 97.4% pure, the rest of the ingredients are stabilising agents. It's thursday plantation the extra ingredients are methyl hydroxybenzoate (1.1mg/g), propyl hydroxybenzoate (0.3mg/g) and diazolidinyl urea (3.0mg/g)

I have no idea what any of those things are? I was most worried about you guys having 100% or 99% when mine is only 97.4% .. what do you think? I haven't put it in my hair yet, I was just wondering if it was ok.

    No idea.
    Mine's got:

Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Butylene Glycol, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Tocophersolan, TEA-Carbomer, Methylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Trisdium, EDTA.

I think the benzoate things are some sort of skin-nourishing product? Or atleast used in them.. I could be wrong though. :\

Thanks for posting Slang, I think I might just go harvest the plant and leave the gel for my kids burns, etc.

Any idea the most effective way to harvest the gel for this use?

just squeeze it out. From the smaller end to the larger end. You could even cut it open at a side and scrap it out. I find squezing it a lot easier. Although I do not use aloe in my hair. You could even rub an open leaf right onto your scalp. I would suggest to all of you to just get an aloe plant. once they start growing, they grow like crazy, and its good to harvest plants, because it makes them stronger and healthier, when done properly.

soul drummer - have you tried getting an actual aloe plant? They're usually sold near cacti. I would imagine it would easy to find in texas. Then you can be sure its actually 100% aloe.
I just cut the leaf and squeeze the goo out and use it on my dreads and as lotion sometimes.

It's strange with those that say 100% aloe vera and then you read the ingredient list and it says more than just aloe vera.. I research a little though, and it showed up that they use aloe vera, but in the processing, water evaporates from it so for a while it's actually maybe 110% aloe vera. Then they add the the ingredients they need until it's 100% again.

I have a bottle of some gel that's used for sunburns and things, was wondering if that is okay? It also says 100% aloe vera, and then I read the ingredients and there are a few other things as well. Do you just put this on your scalps, rub it into the dreads? I might just get myself a plant :)
