Where are the best places in the US to go mushroom hunting? I've heard WA has a great variety thanks to the rainforest...anywhere else?

Well- if your location is really Michigan- there are several wild psilocybe species that grow by you.

Conocybe smithii is one species of psilocybe mushroom known to be found in Michigan.

I also know that Panaeolina foenisecii grows pretty widespread all over the country. It will probably start popping up in lawns, fields and grasses pretty soon (mid-summer months).

Panaeolus subbalteatus is hallucinogenic and known to be in all 50 states. Grows in spring and fall- so those will be coming up fairly quickly also.

My point here is just do some research into magic mushroom species, climate, habitat, etc. and you can likely find them by you. I have succesfully harvested several strains of psilocybe from forests and pastures- you just have to be patient and know what your looking for.

Having a keen eye for mushrooms never hurts either ;)

i may be a bit naive, but i think picking up north is far more difficult and potentially more dangerous as well. you'll definitely run into more numerous and more unusual species in the woods of northern U.S.A. than down south.

i've only picked in florida; mainly dung-lovers like cubensis and cyanescens. these guys are incredibly easy to spot due to their obvious characteristics and the lack of many other non-psychedelic (or poisonous) mushroom alternatives. 4lbs in 2 hours...

Yes, wild picking in the North is potentially more dangerous than in the southern states.

I've been picking mushrooms for several years in western NY, and have found a good amount of hallucinogenic mushrooms here. I used to live in Arizona, where they were much more prevalent though.

If you're picking up North- plan out a whole day for it. Mushrooms can be hard to spot, and a lot of northern species have a tendency to grow solo- meaning when you find them, they arent all bundled together in one spot.

But, if you're experienced, and know what you're looking for- yes, many strains of psilocybe can be found up North.

Be EXTREMELY careful- if you're new at this- probably best to bring a mycologist along- or somebody who knows whats what when it comes to wild mushrooms.

A mistake in this field can be deadly- so dont be foolish and risk it because you wanna trip out. Another bit of advice- pick up some ibpecac syrup for when you eat the mushrooms. If its not working- and you think the strain you have eaten might be poisonous, a tablespoon or two of emetic syrup will make you vomit and help get that out of your system. The next step is calling 911.

    Be safe!
