Just watch 'Spaced' ... proof that we brits are teh funneh!

But also ... Family Guy ... there's tough contenders from either side of the pond but I mainly prefer my comedy to be less in yer face ..

I love British comedies. Absolutely Fabulous, fawlty Towers, the Young Ones, Bottom, Blackadder and the Monthy Python movies. I do love some American comedies as Friends, The Simpsons, Family Guy.. But I still prefer British.

    Spaced is great.

I'm a big fan of British comedy, but that doesn't make American comedy any less funny.

Even though I'm British, my favourite show ever is Married With Children! Ed O'Neill is hilarious, South Park is funny too, and Reno 911, and Richard Pryor was the funniest comedian ever.

The Britsh comedies I like were Harry Enfields show, Father Ted, Only Fools and Horses, and Game On.

In my opinion, American comedies tend to go over the top and then ruin the comedy element (Friends is a good example). But when the Americans get it right, they are funnier than us.

I should add that I'm very easily ammused so my opinion might not mean much.

Well, I admire comedy that is hard-hitting, pokes fun at topical themes, and is ocassionaly offensive.

And it isn't because I'm a limey, but I reckon Brit comedy is better because it is often more likely to have these qualities. But it seems that the Americans have us nailed when it comes to animated comedy. South Park, the Simpsons, Family Guy et al all display the characteristics I admire in good comedy, and I can't think of a single UK animated comedy anyway, let alone a good one.

What I love about the Simpsons is because it was always there as I grew up, the way I watched it changed with time. As a kid I laughed at the obvious bits, and as the years went by I got bored with the same old episodes. A few Simpsons-less years later I started watching again, and the adult humour became apparent for the first time:

    Treehouse of Horror 3:
Burns: What do you think, Smithers?
Smithers: I think women and seamen don't mix.

    To coin a phrase, LMAO.

i prefer British comedy, show's like Mr Bean, Benny Hill, Keeping up Appearances, Coupling, Mind your Language and the list goes on. Brit sitcoms are written where the jokes are in the overall story, where different stories seem to come togther at the end (Seinfield did the same) as opposed to sitcoms here which seem to focus on punch lines.

Id have to say I much prefer british comedy, faulty towers is one of the funniest shows ever made. Did anyone ever see the american remake :(, completely missed the whole point of the show.

I think the main problem with american comedy is the way most of the shows are written compared to british ones. What I mean by that is the way with most american shows they have a team of writters so they can churn out as many shows as possible, all chipping in their little pieces that they find funny amongst themselves but no one else does. Whereas with most british comedies its usually just the creator and original writter(s) that write all the material, they don't bring in a load of overpaid gobshites to wreck it. I mean look at the good american comedies around now, like south park and curb you enthusiasm they do things the way brittish comedies do it, with just the creators and the original idea men writing the material, not resorting to hiring a bunch of hacks to just get as many possible episodes made as quickly as possible.

Don't suppose any of you guys have seen The Castle? Aussies do a lot of great comedy, the poms did old school the best though. Are You Being Served, Faulty Towers, Allo Allo, The Ronnie Barker Show, The Goodies (loved that show) and of course, Some Mother's Do Have Em.

As far as yank shows go, i don't find a lot of the comedyshows funny The canned laughter and average scripts don't go a long way in the way of entertainment. I also think that some shows are poorly cast. However, The Simpsons is a very clever show and Whose Line is it Anyway is funny because of the improv.

As far as shows made within the last 20 years or so definitely the British shows are better. However when you look at all the GREAT comedy shows(as well as every other type of show) the US produced from the 1950s-early 1980s,I would say the older American comedy shows were much better than the Britcoms. The list of GREAT US comedy shows(again 'only' made during the 1950s-early 1980s) would be to long to mention.

the british don't seem to be stagnated the way most american comedies are.we need a british invasion of comedy here.maybe american writers need to take a cue from the british.we used to be funny.i guess our shows are funny (not funny haha though).
