hey people quick question. does any1 kno anythin about making your own runestone necklace/pendant?

im scottish as my name might tell and i love the celtic/viking symbolic runestones. when i was little my mates dad used to carv them into small pieces of wood to make pendants for my mate n i always thought they were cool and now iv decided i want to make myself 1 and possibly one for my girlfriend.

i was thinking bout gettin a very small pece of dark wood maybe the size of a small coin. then i was going to carv the runestone into them and try and fill in the ingrave with black ink or something so that it shows up. a hole in the top of the wood and link it up to some black cord or something.

that should work for me hopefully anybody got other ideas im just curious.

also i wouldnt mind making small beads for my dreads and carving runes into them = )

    cheers

    That sounds good :)

If you're working with wood peices, you can also get yourself a wood burning kit maybe and burn a rune symbol in. Otherwise if you find something like a stone with a hole in it you can always paint it on. (Clear nailpolish painted on top will help protect it from wearing off.)

Oooh... Hamish, that's such a cool idea! I love runestones... I'm of Viking heritage, and they have always appealed to me. I've done a good bit of research on them. I know of a very good website that has the meanings of the runes, as well as the best kinds of wood to use. The Celtics and Vikings believed that different trees embodied different powers, giving strength to the rune symbol they used. Writing was a form of magic to them, and each rune carried with it a part of who ever wrote it. And traditionally, runes were colored with ocher, a red dye. Red was a sacred color, symbolizing blood and life force and all of that jazz. I'll see if I can dig up that website for you... It might help you have a better idea of what symbol to use, as they are powerful totems and not just pretty trinkets. Good idea, though... I'm sure your girl will love it if you can explain to her that they are magical, and what her symbol means.

I have made sets of runes for personal use from wood. Traditionally wooden runes are made from ash, birch, or yew wood, but I find apple works well too. I cut a fallen branch into discs about 3/4 inch thick. Then I use a wood burner to burn the symbol onto each disc, while focusing on the meaning of the rune to give it energy. Then I let the wood dry for a few days before rubbing it with linseed oil to seal it.

i make mine from cedar. i just cut a branch that looks pretty uniform and slice it into disks, then i woodburn the runes on and seal them with whatever wood oil is nearby or i just don't finish them off and leave them raw.

You could use an avacado seed, too. They'rd super easy to carve, the carved part is naturally a different color than the uncarved part and there's no need to seal it. And one avacado would be all you need for you and your gal. Here's pics of some:

From the inside of an avacado from the grocery store. Let the seed dry for a couple of days, then carefully peel the dry skin off of the fleshy part. You will see that the seed is in two halves (once I found three). Stick a knife in between the two halves, pop them apart and you'll have two seeds to carve. Be sure to put a hole in the top. It takes a couple of weeks for them to totally dry out, depending on the humidity of where you are.

    Some more pics:
