i saw this guy last night and it was really awesome. his name is david honeyboy edwards and he's like the oldest musician who's still playing. he's actually 92. it was definitely one of my favorite concerts ever. the club wasnt too big, but there were lots of people, mostly musicians too. and im pretty sure i was the youngest person there. it was really too beautiful. i could close my eyes and pretend that robert johnson was still alive.
Hah... playing a 70s BC Rich Mockingbird. Bizarre. Almost ridiculous. That's what I like about blues musicians. They don't really give a shit what it is, so long as it plays. Actually, Robert Johnson's cousin dated him when he died.... something like that. I can't remember her name.
really? ive heard he was with him that night when he died... i dont think ive ever seen anyone older than him. he rocks
Yeah, he was with him at the bar. I keep thinking RJ's cousin was named something may, but I have several people stuck in my head... plus whenever I think of Robert Johnson anymore, I get that movie, Life, stuck in my head (the one with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence) since it takes place in Mississippi around that time... I think it's the only comedy that kinda picks at that lifestyle, besides the whole blind melon chitlin deal that Cheech and Chong had going. I think the oldest person I've ever met was somewhere like 106... I never really thought of that much before. I used to think about it when I was little. All the stories they could tell...
yeah. he was really telling stories last night. i was sitting pretty close to the stage and the most interesting thing were his hands. and the way they moved
Yeah, he's big into Martin acoustics... I always see him playing a different guitar every time. He used to play this punkass looking model, which I thought was cool. He used it for a slide guitar because it wasn't made out of real wood and you could pretty much do anything with it as far as climate goes. Some guitars are like "no, no... maybe this one shouldn't leave the house"
OMG YES. I used to have a picture of his hands in my signature, a longgggg long time ago. There's a really good amateur pic of his hands somewhere on google. It's rather large. I think he has really beautiful hands, though. Not to be a weirdo or anything. His hands are the kind of hands that just say "Yeah, man, I was there..."
i think i have one of those guitars in my room right now. my brother's like: you have to wash your hands before you look at it! and dont even think of trying to play somewhere outside!
haha, EXACTLY! i really couldnt stop looking at his hands. during the break he was sitting there signing his dvds and i was right there next to him and i was thinking all the time how beautiful his hands were. lol
Ahahah... I know the feeling. I feel kind of ridiculous leaving the house with a life investment in my hand. That's the horrible thing about really nice guitars. I meticulously saved up little by little since I was 12 or 13 and managed to get really good instruments. A lot of people don't understand that and think they were just given to me or something. Also, we used to be poor as shit and my dad always promised one day that we'd have a piano or something, back when I was little. I used to play piano/organ a lot more, but I don't have either anymore. I feel bad for a lot of people who can really play but don't have anything to play on... I have a lot of friends like that. Sometimes I just bring all my stuff to their house and jam on a Friday or Saturday night. I pretty much do it every weekend, these days. Actually, the first saturday of every month, I'm going to start heading to a bluegrass jam at this place http://www.pickerssupply.com Keller Williams always used to use that store to distribute his CDs, back before he was famous. I love the place. Pat Methany dropped by last year, I believe. Bunch of others have been there... I think Charlie Byrd, bunch of other rootsy music/blues/jazz folks. Charlie died last year, but he was from my area... Really classy guy. He was also Virginia Tech alumni. And the only musician of that status, that I know of, that has attended Tech. Ella Fitzgerald was also born here. She is like... the ubermother of women vocalists. I wish her and Aretha Franklin could have done something, as Duane Allman was Aretha's session guitarist in the studio (back when they were at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama)... so Duane and Ella would just be one wild combination. If I had any one musician I wish I could chill with at this moment, it'd either be Jerry, Duane, or Stevie Ray. Probably Duane, man. I'd give a lot to go fishing and have a beer with Duane or something. Haha, if I was to go on a road trip across the country... I would bring Hunter S. Thompson, Duane, and Rosie... my neighbor's St. Bernard. It'd be a trip, man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBs_nzDbX8I Shit, this is a good song.... but being with the brothers is always better, so... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wISH-tBgN_g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kjU309Twow Shit man, I feel like going fishing today. Get em Jaimoe, get em... Jaimoe is the shit, man. I think I've always had a thing for Jaimoe's accentation over Butch's drive. Jaimoe's Jassssssss band, man.
omg, duane and ella would definitely be one wild combination! but if i had one musician i wish i could chill with at this moment, it'd probably be steve ray. or robert johnson. and i would bring Christina, my St. Bernard. =)
damn, i love that song! i should definitely listen to them tonight, its been a while. one thing that i hate about living here is that i wont be able to see allman brothers man.
I don't know... these days they've been widening their tours and they have plenty of side bands that tour through Europe, but you really have to work to find them. Oteil, their bassist, often chills down at the Jewish Mother in VA Beach, when he's in the area. He does little shows there. It's just a little bakery/restaurant/club place... Only problem is Gregg is getting older, but I hate to say it, at least we won't lose him to heroin or something crazy. Dickey doesn't seem to want to come to terms and part with their old ways, but I still can't see the brothers one year without seeing Dickey whenever he comes through here. Gregg has family round where I live, so he stops through from time to time. Their father was murdered while they lived in Norfolk, VA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzmXL821mKM Hey Jude via Allman/Pickett
