OK, well on monday I went bearfoot, BUT when I told my parents what I did, I got a lecture on how I'll catch dieseses by bearfooting and how I should only bearfoot on the beach, indoors and in the country.

So, what's your view on that, I'd like to show my semi-anti bearfoor parents.

Sadly most people think you can catch diseases or worry about chemicals on the ground and stuff like that.

The true fact is there is pretty much no disease you can catch by going barefoot unless you live in a third world country.

Most often people will think you will get ringworm or athletes foot from going barefoot but the true fact is you actually get those from wearing shoes because they need to have heat and moisture to live on your feet which is why people catch those diseases if they take a shower in a public shower and then put their shoes on, its a total no no and a chance at instant athletes foot.

It is impossible to catch those diseases if you go barefoot.

I used to have athletes foot from school when I wore shoes all the time. I used spray and powder and everything and it would not go away. My doctor actually told me to go barefoot more often so I decided to just do it all the time and it was gone in 2 weeks.

As for chemicals there is a very very low chance you will absorb chemicals or anything else harmful from going barefoot unless it was spilled like just before you came by and stepped in it while wet.

The only real danger is sharp stuff like glass and the like, but when you go barefoot you learn to watch where you step to avoid sharp stuff and over time your feet get tough so you can even walk on glass with no problem.

Bottom line is there is almost no danger for going barefoot.

It is also healthy for you as it naturally balances the muscles and bones in your body. I used to have a knee problem from a fall when I was young. I would also get sciatica (back pain that goes down your leg) like every 3 or 4 months. After I started going barefoot both of those problems have disappeared along with my athletes foot.

That's why even NIKE makes a shoe so that supposedly you can walk as if you are barefoot. But why buy a $100 shoe when you can JUST DO IT for free?

Like the previous posted said though you should check out barefooters.org for the best info.

I have made a compramise with my mum, I can bearfoot:

    • In the country
    • On a beach
    • at home
    • in the garden
    I cannot bearfoot:

    • in cities or towns
Not the result I wanted. The country is only a few minutes by bike and I live within cycling distence of a beach, but it'll be advisible to avoid the beaches along the forth (we had a sewage spill) and I really wanted to do it in the city. :( The campaigning goes on....

I dont bother telling them anything about going barefoot, I just do it. They didnt say I couldnt do it so they got nothing to be upset with me about.

Your Mom is not even as bad as my Mom was. At first she would not even let me go outside my house because she said the soil had worms in it, you can imagine how upset she was when I went downtown.

But after a while of persistance she finally gave in and now its a total non issue .

Looks like you'll just have to move out to the country to satisfy both your parents and your feet.

Not to point out the obvious, but you know you're spelling barefoot as "bearfoot," right?

I`m not sure what to say. It´s just my thoughts. For teenagers there are risks of drug related crimes, violence, suicide, reckless driving and they worry about the risks of you going barefoot.
I think you are old enough to take care of your self.
It´s easy for parents to tell you about those risks just in general, but hard to get in to it in specific if they don´t know what they are talking about.
Tell them in a polite way you appreciate that they care, but say you belive in your oppinion the worries about the risks of going barefoot are exagerated.
Ask them to tell you examples about someone you know that actually had gotten some kind of disease from going barefoot.
Tell them that you are old enough to take care of your self when going barefoot.
Try to turn the discussions into the positive and healthy aspects of going barefoot.
Let your parents know that going barefoot are something you really like to do.
Make your parents used to the idea of going barefoot.
Do you have some friends that like to go barefoot too? Maybe they could show up little by your house?

Not bad suggestions. I'd add the following:

Find a physician who is sympathetic to your plight and arrange for him/her to visit with your parents in the physician's office. There's nothing like a white-coated authority to bring about a change of opinion for those with a more conservative world view.
