The Walks are held around October 2nd in honor of World Farm Animals Day. Walks are generally 5k – 10k long (about 3 to 6 miles) and are often held in public parks. We have a "Mutt March" benefit for the animal shelter here, but no Farm Animals Walk. I wish we could hold something like this.
I'm unsure how well this would go in communities without a large vegetarian or animal protection base, what do you think?

    Hi Peacegal,

I think it would be wonderful if you could host a Walk for Farm Animals in your area. I don't know where you live, (The old Forest?) but I understand why you would wonder what kind of turn-out a "Walk for Farm ANimals" will receive. It is almost hypocritical for someone to walk for this cause if they are meat eaters. Although in Toronto, we do get some people coming out who won't eat factory farmed animal products- just organic meat. The majority of walkers are veg*ns. Even if someone is not walking, they can be a potential pledge. Toronto does have a large vegetarian community so I do hope that the turn out will be good. We have a huge walk-a-thon for companion animals, just one week prior, called "PAWS" in the park, put on by the local humane society. So one problem I am having is that many animal lovers are already walking for that cause, and since it's just one week prior, it's hard to ask people to donate money twice.

You could contact the National Coordinator at Farm Sanctuary (Michelle Waffner) at 607-583-4512 and see what her opinion is about holding a walk in your town/ city. It may be short notice now to get it going, but it may be good to talk to her about doing it next year.

Good luck. Let me know how you make out.

Yeah, I'm like you, I don't know how well a farm animals walk would do in areas without strong vegetarian populations. Actually, I'm in the US..West Virginia, otherwise known as The State That Gives Hunting Tips With the Nightly News.
It took about 5 years for the Mutt March to get off the ground, and the venues have changed several times, but it is now a yearly activity. Unfortunately, although many of the people associated with the local humane and sheltering community are vegetarian or primarily so, they still feel the need to serve meat at all their functions.
However, one thing all charity marches have in their favor is that many people join in any and all charity walks and activities, as both a way to give back to the community and get exercise. Thanks for the number though, if I can't get anyone interested around here I have friends in more progressive, larger areas which may very well be able to organinize this project.
