Honestly, i've tried it all- the dead, hendrix, the doors-while stoned. All three of these bands certainly sound great, but i would explain that type of music as almost "single layered"- as in it's just a guitar, drums etc and theres nothing really going on in the backround- no real mood or whatever, just a song/story. Dont get me wrong, im a dead head till the day i die, but i've recently been searching for more "layered" music with stuff going on in the foreground, backround and all that. So i started listening to techno...and ehh...it just seemed almost depersonalized to me...like there's no human connection. Basically sounds like robot music to me. So i found my self in a struggle: which do i listen to: the organic feel of the dead, hendrix etc., or this robotic stuff? Eventually, i popped a Flaming Lips cd (the soft bulletin) into my cd player and was just blown away. I would explain the flaming lips as a 50 50 blend of techno and rock. They're basically like the Chili peppers on BUCKETS of acid. Probably the neo-pink floyd as well. Truly amazing music. If you go on their website you can listen to THE ENTIRE new cd, as well as songs from other cd's in the audio section. I would STRONGLY reccomend you guys check out "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" and especially "The soft bulletin"- these two cd's are unbelievably stellar. Unlike most cd's, these ones actually have a story line which plays out throughout the entire cd- (similar to Pink Floyd) which is always really cool. Check em out, i'm sure you'll become fans, ya gotta love it!
They recently played in FL my friends say their concert was great, but yeah I didn't read this so I don't know what your talking about
I've been a fan of The Flaming Lips for about 10 years now. I posted a thread about the lips in the indie/alt. boards, but nobody responded, guess theres not too many flaming lips fans on here... I agree they are an amazing band. Their new album was recorded 5 minutes from where I live, in Cassadaga NY, and I ran into Wayne Coyne in a local restaurant! 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots' is an amazing concept album, the themes and its metaphorical nature is simply awesome. 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots' is currently being adapted into a BROADWAY show!! I'm definitely seeing that- the lips are notorious for their crazy stage props.
yeah man- have you heard zaireeka? Apparantly that's a pretty cool experience...my only issue is i dont have 4 cd players. WHOA WHOA WHOA- can u hook me up w/ a link to that broadway play thing???? wow sounds awesome. also: is four winds a grateful dead reference (frankies tower)?
Well, I saw it in Rolling Stone, last months issue I believe. Heres a link: http://www.chartattack.com/DAMN/2007/03/2208.cfm I have had the opportunity to listen to 'Zaireeka,' its crazy as hell! Me and my buddies set it up and got high to it, it was pretty trippy. It even came with a diagram on how to set the shit up, where to sit etc. Definitely worth the hassle though- right then I was like 'Wow, this band has something special' And Four Winds is taken from the Bright Eyes song 'Four Winds'
yeah, that's my favorite of theirs. the best "layered" band, imo, is My Bloody Valentine, particularly Loveless.
The Flaming Lips are every colour of awesome. Zaireeka works and is brilliant, and their last few productions are amazing too. And if you see one concert before you die, see the Lips.
Agreed. Their concerts are fucking epic in every sense. GratefulFloyd- The Pink Floyd comparisons are more apparent in their newest work 'At War With The Mystics.'
I'll have to check it out... how are they similar, like, conceptually, songwriting wise, or are they just a little spacy or something?
