The anniversary of the Kent State University massacre is coming up on May 4th. We can't forget these people, who were gunned down simply for expressing their views, being censored in the worst possible way. Don't forget them, or their deaths will be in vain. If you don't know... On May 4, 1970, students at Kent State University in Ohio had a peaceful, noon-time, anti-Vietnam war demonstration. The executive board of the University wanted "this hippie crap" to stop, so they called in the Ohio National Guardsman. They fired upon the students, murdering four, and and injuring nine innocent students, who were just standing up for what they believed was right. Never Forget KSU. Peace.Alixi.

It's interesting that Lt. Fassinger who was the commander of the national guard at the Kent incident recently met with the members of the May 4th task force. That's a first. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/may4taskforce/album/576460762396617418 .
Four Dead in Ohio... Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, Were finally on our own. This summer I hear the drumming, Four dead in Ohio. Gotta get down to it Soldiers are gunning us down Should have been done long ago. What if you knew her And found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know? Gotta get down to it Soldiers are gunning us down Should have been done long ago. What if you knew her And found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know? Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, Were finally on our own. This summer I hear the drumming, Four dead in Ohio. OHIO -Neil Young
Crosby, Stills and Nash showed up at Kent University in 1997 and did a free performance during the commemoration. .
I remember Kent State. I always will. It was a blow to my generation. We felt that if we operated within law we were protected. Kent State showed us that no one is protected.
If an order was issued to fire it should be followed up on, and the fact that it wasn't at the time can only prove a cover up. http://news.bostonherald.com/national/midwest/view.bg?articleid=197633 If the national guard fired because they felt their lives endangered then we have to question their level of training. And now we are sending ill trained national guard to foreign lands to protect US interests. Says a lot for the US doesn't it. Brave warriors weren't they?
Contact Alan: alan.canfora@gmail.com "...it's very hard to ignore that Kent State thing. They were down there, man, ready to do it. You can see them, they're all kneeling there, they're all in the kneeling position and they got their slings tight and they're ready to shoot. And there's this kid, this long-haired kid standin' there with a flag wavin' it... I mean, I cannot be a man, and be a human, and ignore that." -- DAVID CROSBY, ROLLING STONE magazine interview, July 23, 1970, pp. 22-23. http://alancanfora.com/ Alan was the kid in the picture, he was shot through the wrist, the one holding the flag.
ever occur to people that maybe, just maybe the national guard thought that they heard a gun shot or something like that that made them feel threatened. Because if they're going to show up with guns blazing they would have killed more then four people. But no, no they just showed up with guns blazing thats how it happened.
It was a different time protesters and college students didn't strap on guns and shoot up their classmates then. And the young ill trained national guard did show up with guns blazing. Thank god they didn't kill more.
That's exactly how it happened! You want to put your puny little preppy ass on the line? You don't even want to pick up your own trash.
Don't diminish the lives that were lost by empty statements that only serve your personal goals. You probably never even heard of Kent state in your prep school. And any protest you would go to you'd hire a maid or butler to care your sign for you.
What we need to remember right now is that in 1970 unarmed college students were murdered by the state. And no one was ever held accountable. http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/04/1342257
Canfora is usually at the commemorations each year. He and the guard member that says he shot him have been in contact with each other via email recently. There's a chance the two will eventually meet in person. I don't think they have yet. A lot of time has gone by and things have started to mellow just a little bit. .
I have two friends who were at the prostest at Kent State when the murders occurred. They remain strong and passionate protesters to this day. Here's another story. Canfora wants the case reopened: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070430/ap_on_re_us/kent_state_shootings I don't know how my friends feel about this since it's been about a year since I've talked to them, but from what I know of them, I'm sure they'd agree. I say reopen the case so we can all have closure!
I am absolutley glad that people care so much about this! It is one of the things they more often than not, leave out of the history textbooks... Peace.Alixi.
