My friend is moving to Gates of the Arctic National Park for around 5 months. What should he make sure he brings. I know that good judgment and his employer should dictate this, but I want to give him a good send off. Anything anybody can think of that is not an obvious item? I know it will be an isolated post working as maintenance.....so bear mace, porn ;), etc...?? What do you all think, any advice I can give him?

    Thank you all

Gates of the Arctic National Park is the least visited park in the entire system.
The Headquarters are in Bettles Alaska (pop.43). Bettles is only reachable by plane during the warmer months. In winter you can drive the frozen rivers and frozen tundra.
Is your friend working at the lodge or for the Parks Service ?
The entire area consists of thousands of square miles of musk bogs, which grow some of the largest mosquitoes on the face of the earth.
So first thing to pack is a lot of bug dope. Not the earth friendly crap, he needs the 100% Deet. The stinging insects are know to take down a full grown caribou.
Next, a good rifle, 30-06 or better. Fuck the bear mace or pepper spray, that just pisses a bear off. The bells on your pack is like ringing the dinner bell.
A good side arm would be a 454 mag. or a 50 cal. mag., and don't go anywhere without it. This IS bear country.
Next would be a good pair of rubber boots, we wear "x-tra tuffs", there about $70.00
    a pair.
Lots of paperback books, good for reading and good for trading.
Medium weight spinning rod and a well stocked tackle box. Good fishing for trout and grayling in the creeks and small lakes. Don't forget a non-resident fishing license.
Hope your friend plays cribbage, they play a lot of it in that area. A few extra decks of cards wouldn't be a bad idea..
Tell them good luck. I'll be around if you have any questions....Dennis...Alaskan...
