Almost got caught the other day by my host father, who is quite the typical German, stereotypically-wise. So, I was home alone for the day, and my host parents usually come home at 7:30 at night, so I wasnt planning on being "ready" (as in being done smoking and having my shit hidden away) until then. I hung out on the balcony, and brought out my drawing pad and pastels. I started a new picture, and some sketches, and smoked two fat bowls. (btw, the weed was insaaaaaaaaanely good, made me feel like my first couple times stoned!). All was good... Then the day progressed, I drew more, played piano, and then called my mom back in the US to say hi, since I hadnt in a while. I had a bowl packed sitting out on the balcony table, which is visible from the kitchen. I spoke with my mom for an hour, and as Im talking, who decides to show up at home 2 hours early??? Thats right, my fuckin host dad. Well, I was too busy chirping along on the phone, and then I realized: MY BOWL. So, as I was talking, I went downstairs, and passed by my host father in the kitchen, and looked out the kitchen window to see if he would be able to see my shit sitting out on the table: luckily, my bowl wasnt visible at all, it was hidden by flowers on the table, but my lighter was in plain view. I rushed out and sat down at the table and kept on talking to my mom, as if I went out there to enjoy the fresh air and talk. Sneakily, I picked up my bowl and was happy once again taht I had bought such a small pipe: it can be hidden completely if you bunch it in your fist. I did that, and shoved the lighther in my pocket, finished my conversation and went upstairs, and hid my stuff all away. Then I came downstiars, and was doing the dishes, and my host fahter comes to me and asks: "What did you do today Dylan?" "Nothing, I was out on the balcony for a while, drawing, see?" (and showed him my new picture). "Cool," he said. "So tell me Dylan, what was the lighter out on the table on the balcony for?" To gain a bit of time to think of something, I asked him to repeat the question, pretending as if I didnt understand his German. "There was a lighter on the table, what did you need it for?" "Oh!" I said. "I was just burning incense out there as I was drawing today," I said smoothly, giving him full eye contact calmly. Dylan has mastered the art of lying in another language! He responded: "Oh, okay." The funny thing is, he knows I smoke, and I know that he knows that I smoke, and HE knows that I know that he knows that I smoke, and I know that he knows that I know he knows I smoke. Its so ridiculous. Its almost as if he wants me to just flat-out tell him, but Im not going to. haha
uh... you coulda told him you were using wax pencils to draw and you needed a lighter or something. i do woodburning and wood refinishing sometimes and i need a lighter to burn off frayed wood and stuff. that kind of excuse works. just be sure it's something they don't really understand but they would trust that you understand. like heating wax pencils to make them softer or something. good job on the lying in german, though. it's a skill i do not have.
here's the German translation of our dialogue between me and my host father....you READY???? "es gab ein Feurzeug auf den Tisch in der Wintergarten. Wofür was es?" (i needed time to think and asked him to repeat it) "warum haste ein Feurzeug gebraucht? wofür haste es benutzt?" "oh, ich hab rauchstaube gebrannt, als ich heute gemalt hab." "ach so! okei." ooooooooooooooooh! the sneakiness
that was some confusing shit at the end man, but you should try to smoke with your dad because it seems to me that he dosent give a flying fuck and it might be funny to do.
^hes a host father, as in, not my real father, and no Im not into tryin to smkoe him up.. I dunno what hed do. I defnitely dont think Id be sent home, theyd just lecture me and I wouldnt be allowed to be caught smoking again or something.
when in someones house, you should obey their rules... but outside the house is open imo, personal freedom.
Can you explain this situation of how you're in germany for a year living with people who aren't related to you, is it like an exchange? But really long?
^ yeah: I won some scholarship thing for a year-long exchange trip to Germany from the Congress. Ive been living in Berlin since October 1st, but Ive been in Gemrany since Sept 1st. Its amazing in Berlin, I love it here! You should all come here! Its so great...and I was just at a Bob Dylan concert live! it was cool.. anywho! yeah, like someone else said, respecting someone elses ruels is good, and I respect they dont like the smoking with them, but I do it outside on a balcony while theyre gone, so I dont think thats bad. If it was inside thatd be another thing.
