US soldiers can no longer send email or post on blogs without content review by a superior officer. This is outright censorship. Isn't it wonderful to know that our soldiers are fighting and dying for the right to be censored by their fascist government? http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/05/army_bloggers This is ONE MORE attempt to keep the public from knowing the TRUTH about the endless WARS the US is conducting. You are NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW the TRUTH and your gov't will do everything in its power to keep you from knowing it!
When soldiers sent letters home decades ago, didn't spouses and family sometimes get them with certain things blacked out? I think I have heard stories about that, that letters would reach their destination obviously opened. However, some soldiers who have come back from Iraq have come back with a changed mind and have sparked the anti war movement quite a bit. So, as much as it sucks that they are being censored, they can not be stopped from spreading the word vocally when they are back here. Just like 30+ years ago. I have to say it is quite an outrage however that they are being censored like this.
Yeah it's part of the military experience. You can't wipe your own butt without prior approval. When they take their oath they vow to follow orders and orders equal restrictions. Joining the military isn't like taking a private sector job, where your own time and life are your own. You agree to live by the military code of conduct the entire time you are enlisted.
Yes, they can order you to KILL, and you must KILL whether you want to or not. But now you have to KEEP QUIET ABOUT IT! Don't let anyone know how many innocent civilians and children you've killed, how you did it, how much pleasure you and your mates got out of it, how you covered it up, how your superiors covered it up, etc. Isn't that dandy...
I am surprised the Bush administration has allowed free/uncensored web access and communication up to this point. It just shows how incompetent their advisors and experts have been.
Yup, it surprised me too, but I think they were thinking the soldiers would be greeted with flowers and kisses in Iraq & Afghanistan, so the communications would only be full of peace and love... But think about this. Most young soldiers have been online since they were in nursery school. For them to have their emails read and censored by others is almost unthinkable to many I bet! It's like having your parents looking over your shoulder. And unfortunately, unlike snail mail, the receipients won't see the blacked out words, they'll just be GONE from the email like they never existed! Of course soldiers CAN still phone their families and tell them what's really going on, unless phone calls too are being monitored and censored. That will be next! The reason they did this is because a few soldiers blogs & emails have gotten a LOT of notice lately and as the antiwar movement expands among those on the front lines, more want to reveal what is really going on in Iraq & Afghanistan, and their freedom of speech is now curtailed so that the truth cannot be told and spread so easily.
I am certain phone calls are already monitored and recorded. But it took Bush and Co. 4 plus years to see a huge marketing flaw. That's pure incompetence or arrogarnce.
.....so damned if they do damned if they dont? could be "breach in security operations". I doubt the insurgents are blogging their daily plans.
Actually it is really stupid of any administration to allow uncensored posting of activities by military personnel. I can't believe it was ever allowed.
Don't know about you, but I keep hoping the QUEEN is here to take back her land! Do you realize the Brits could probably INVADE the US right now and take it over with no problem! We don't have any defense left (other than nukes!) Sorry to be OT. You do realize of course that cellphones and email didn't exist in previous wars like this one. So of course there was no policy concerning them before. And no doubt it is very difficult to demand that soldiers comply with these rules since they've had access to email, the Internet and cellphones since they were children. It's kinda like taking a kid's ninetendo away, or telling them which games they can and can't play. How are our mercenaries supposed to have fun without murdering more innocent ppl?
Can you post a link to some of those blogs - one more line of information would be appreciated - thanks.
Communications personal and general have always been covered up to the point now when our military is more governed by privated contractors than ever before. Hard to believe that the defense department and the administration weren't aware of the influence of email and the internet.
If i had heard of them i'd not ask for them would i. Stop jumping to conclusions. Instead of that why not post a few.
Actually MB I posted some of the links in the thread where we discussed atrocities committed in Iraq. Remember the soccer game with a head thread? That x gi posted about his experiences. But some would like us to post all the links so that perhaps they can be followed up on and closed down. I am not going to do their work for them. I leave that to the highly paid and extraordinary professionals at Homeland Security and the Administration to find out for themselves.
Oh yeah i remember- i can't remember that one in particular - i do remember the ''taking the piss out of the kids''. Sorry Higherthanhell i know about those ones - if that is what you are talking about ?. Were those within blogs from soldiers ?. Those videos are all over the place including youtube. I doubt anybody will get that site closed down any time soon. I was just hoping to READ some blogs not watch videos that have been plastered all over the net. The only ones i can find are pretty tame and not really in the same ball park as what is being described in this thread. Do not think i wish to get some sick enjoyment out of them - regardless what you think of my opinions i'd hope you did not think i was like THAT. I doubt you could post ALL the links to all the sites - as they tend to get picked up copied and copied and copied. I do know what you mean though. I hope you not infering that i'd be emailing the FBI or something along those lines  ? -
I don't know who you really are anymore than you know who I am. Your interest is suspect. You can find the same blogs I read by the same means I found them. The fact that the present administration could not foresee the importance of the internet leads me to believe they are so stupid that they would think all they would have to do is ask other users to disclose the information they sought. Then they wouldn't have to use any intellegence at all to arrive at their means. Fool me once shame on you. Don't try to fool me twice!
Well trust me i'm not the FBI - go join me on msn and i'll give you a wave . Why ? I'm not omnipotent i do not know everything neither am i aware of every website every person here has looked at - hence me ASKING. I'm not a mind reader either.
