This may or may not be relevant, but what are some good areas of study to go into (get a degree in) if you're considering going into the Peace Corps?
When I went for my meeting with the Peace Corps recruiting office, they said it doesn't matter so much what your major is but rather what you do with your free time- ie. tutor immigrants in English or work for a nonprofit or do community organizing. So just major in what you're interested in and if you're a qualified applicant, the Peace Corps will find something for you. If you know you want to work in environmental work, major or minor in environmental science. If you know you want to work with kids (and plan to continue that in the future), major in education. But seriously, don't stress and pick something you like. Personally, I'm triple majoring in international relations (with a focus on poverty and inequality), politics (with a focus on community organizing internationally), and Latin American studies (with a multi-focus on Mexico, Bolivia, and Cuba). Now, I'm doing those purely out of interest, but also because it will help me be placed somewhere in Latin America with the Peace Corps.
You should do it, flowerpower! I know it's most common to hear about college students doing it, but I was just reading an article last week about how more and more retirees are going. So even if you can't do it now due to work or family obligations, it's never too late!
I have a friend who just joined the peace corps, and he went to school to teach high school history. he was also an RA and a member of several campus organizations.... i don't really know which of those if any the peace corps really looked at when deciding whether to accept him
wow... I used to say I wanted to join the Peace Corps, I forgot that. I think I should blame my lack of direction for that, havent got a degree, what's busy "finding" myself... now I'm going to study writing. hmm.. maybe I shouldnt forget about that this time.
