Bach o nthe organ... Passacalia in C minor, toccata&fuge, etc... Why the fuck aren't these things more popular?
i totally agree! Bach was an absolute genius. just been reading this book called 'The Mozart Effect' by Don Campbell which takes a thorough look at how music affects the brain, and it begs the question- why, if classical and baroque music affect our thoughts and responses in such positive ways, do people still hugely favour rock and pop? there was this test done on plants in greenhouses that showed how plants listening to Bach or Indian classical music grew far more healthily and in larger numbers than those in the rock greenhouse where the plants didn't want to grow! I think, to answer your question, i would say that Bach is not easy listening, it is quite complex stuff. The Toccata that you mentioned is full of many different lines of music playing at the same time (I think so any way, lol). also, a lot of people don't grow up on this kinda stuff and so even if they know it exists its not the music that comes on the radio every morning if you c what i mean. in this society of stress Bach can chill us out but i know that after a tough day i will go home and listen to something with a strong beat, and a good hook line that i can scream along to. But, like you, i think that Toccata and fugue is awesome.
Bach was all right. I guess we go way back to preschool piano lessons. I prefer Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Bach is more pillowy, cushion music. I can relax to it and am pleasantly amused. Just because we appreciate old masters, it doesn't mean discrediting newer geniuses. I like Vanessa Mae's crazed violin work and Toccata and Fugue (reworked) is one of my favourites of hers.
First off, I'm not into hippie experiments with trees to see what music is superior, rofl. I do agree with you on a lot though, velvet. It's utterly sad how people neglect the works of Bach and other heart heavy/extraordinarily complex classical music in light of more simplistic, modern "beat heavy", repetitive and monotonous music. I'm a little of a hypocrite, because I myself am a heavy metal junkie, but contemporary music is still shit compared to classical. PS: Bach is pillowy, cushion music? You sicken me! Go listen to Passacalia in C minor, and tell me that anything dull or boring is going on! Rachmaninoff is pretty sick too!
Dude, you need to stop talking like you are some Bach genious haha. I can play a HUGE amount of Bach's peices on guitar and piano, I taught myself as well. There is PLENTY of people who dig Bach, perhaps you are a recluse? So what if its not as popular as rock, it had its time, be thankful it was held in such a high regard in its day that you even have the ability to know it existed.
That's kind of true... I never thought i was a Bach genius, as I know nothing about classical, and even have misconceptions. The thing about being greatful it even existed? I hear that! Question: Weren't there some classical composers who's music we'll never know about?
absolutely! Antonio Salieri was writing at the same time as Mozart, and he was seen as the best composer in Vienna in his day. People didn't understand Mozart's genius. The opposite applies today. i'm sure Salieri's music is still around somewhere. I guess one might ask if he is worth reviving. But then, if it hadnt been for Mendlehsson (cant spell his name) Bach would have been forgotten- yet he is clearly a celebrated genius as we have been discussing. Mendlehesson came across all of Bach's works and realised the beauty they held, and showed it to the world. Some composers must have slipped the net.
Bach was a real genius, i really don´t know any other composer with such great ideas... it really doesn´t matter on which instrument his compositions are played, they always sound like Bach... I think one of his masterpieces was his musical sacrifice, he wrote a "never-ending" canon (please excuse my terrible english...) , which modulates one note higher at its ending, another one can be played in augmentation, forwars and backwards simultaneously, and many more real freaky things... in his church music, every single note, every chord has its sense, why it is e.g. on the 8th bar and not in the 7th, etc...
