buy a bread machine, I mean toss the shit in, push the button and forget about it. No fuss, no mess and you get the aroma and flavor.

Keep lots of butter and blueberry jelly on hand.

Whaaaat? :D I love kneading bread! It's like a giant stress ball, except it's even more useful in the end. :D :D

it can, doesn't have to, just like cookies they can have chocolate chips but they don't need to have them to be a good cookie.

If I'm making bannock to accompany a meal type thing I usually leave fruits out but if I want it to be a little more deserty i'll add raisins or cranberries or other dried fruits. or dress up the plain bannock with home made jams and jellies...

I love kneading too, especially to some good music, it makes the 10 mins go a whole lot faster! :)

Hmm...I've never made homemade bread! (except for banana and zucchini) I'm kind of embarassed, but I never even considered it! As for cookies...like hell I'm going to buy those dry store ones over nice homemade.

I'll give homemade bread a try sometime next week!

Hmm...interesting, thought provoking thread. I have to add in a saying my dad used to have though, and it still works for me; "to the craftsman, his craft", meaning I'd rather work doing what I know, like and do well and use the resulting green energy ($) to fund what OTHERS know, like and do well. What's more important to me is spending my dough on smaller production level, higher quality goods (great local baked breads for example, from the local bakeries)...leave the Wonder bread on the shelves, dig? It won't go bad anyway because of all the preservatives in it.

What I'm promoting in its idealized form is the barter system I guess...what the money system should be and not necessarily what it is.

I mainly stuck with quick breads. No kneading, small loaves got eaten quickly. I guess I should thing about doing so again since quick stuff really takes no time at all. And I know EXACTLY what is in it. Whole grain wheat is all ever I ever eat-maybe some multi-grain this time around...

The trick is to live so far out on the land, that it's easier to make it than to run to the store!!! By the way, it's fun to bake it in old cans that you recycle..(make sure they are well oiled though)the "Diggers" used to do that back in the day..and gave it away for free. I bake bread every week with my students at our (Waldorf)school..the room smells like baking bread and lavender oil..heavenly aromatherapy

I like the ideas you all have about making your own bread or other homemade stuff vs buying store bought.

Im wondering if anyone makes homemade spaghetti/marinara sauce?

I noticed a seafood store in Minneapolis called coastal seafoods that sells this light tomato sauce, it looks like tomato soup almost, but isn't quite a spaghetti/ pizza sauce since youd have to add more tomatoes, herbs, onions or garlic..etc.

What I did notice is it contains very little sodium which is good. Problem with alot of store bought canned goods is they put too much of that in the canned goods.

Another thing is convenience since it takes too much time to make your own stuff so you are stuck buying store bought instead.

Oh, we Norwegians are old fashioned...

    I wonder how they work

I have sort of an OT question. Would it be possible to say, spend a whole day on baking bread and then just storing the loaves? How long does homemade bread usually keep? Should it be frozen to keep longer (so I can minimize oven usage in the summer)? I absolutely detest eating things that I don't make myself. You never know what sorts of extras they put in.

I just started baking my own bread again after many years. The last loaf I made was 2 days ago. It's great, I love the feeling of kneading the dough, and watching it rise..all of it, actually! ^^ Sure it takes a little more time, but it's worth it, because I know that artificial "enhancers" "flavorings" and-especially-preservatives will not be included in my food. I know it sounds picky, but I'm trying to live more simply right now. We also don't use bread too much in my house, so buying the loaves at the store doesn't make sense for us. They usually end up going bad before we even think about using them, and that's just wasteful. Usually, if a recipe yields 2 loaves, I'll cut it in half, or I'll make one loaf, and use the rest to make bread rolls.

I try to make everything I can at home: breads, tomato sauce, cakes, whatever..It's easy to resist buying tomato sauce, and bread, because I prefer what I make, but it's harder to go by the cakes, and cookies without stopping.

It sounds silly, but even though the amount of bread I eat is limited, I have to stop myself from baking it again and again, just because I love the whole process.

Kudos, Irish Hippy, you're on your way! I'm still learning too, it's good that you tried.
