Sorry to cross thread guys (another version of this thread can be found here:
    http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234821)

    Hi guys,

I was sent out to a few people recently saying that because of the changing of some ingredients some food won't be suitable for vegetarians any more.

    The exact text is:
“Due to a change in the ingredients used in our chocolate recipes from 1st May 2007 many of our products now contain whey. This is a by-product of the cheese making process and uses rennet derived from an animal source. Therefore we feel it is for individual vegetarians to judge whether they are comfortable in consuming cheese products that do not bear a vegetarian symbol; we would consider our products to fall into this same category.

Products that are currently in store or that you may have already purchased that carry a Best Before Date of 1st October or before are still suitable for your consumption, however if you have purchased any products with a best before after this date then we will be more than happy to refund the value of the product. Please see attached lists for further information.”[IMG]

The actual letter scans and whole list can be seen here:
    http://masterfoodspetition.blogspot.com/

There is also a mini-petition available:
    http://www.petitiononline.com/MarsWhey/petition.html

It would be good if you had a few spare seconds and you could just sign it! [IMG] I know a few people have signed up with idiot names but hopefully this will be outweighed with the number of people with proper names.

The chocolates are very popular, so I don't know why they want to change their ingredients (save money??), but hey ho.

    Thanks guys.

Milk chocolate yes, but this is about rennet which is made from the cow's stomach making it not just not vegan, but not vegetarian.

I wonder how much money they will actually save by making this change and how that compares with the amount of lost sales from vegetarians...

How hard is it to source their whey from vegetarian cheese?

Cheese is always made with rennet, but rennet is not always made from animals. There are vegetable rennets which are used for vegetarian cheeses. Most cheeses sold in the UK are vegetarian.

Hmm. Obviously you'd have to check the source, but I'd say 90-95% of the cheese made in the UK is made with vegetarian rennet derived from bacteria. Only exception might be some local "traditional" farmers still use cow's rennet but if anything their cheese would be less economical.

Being vegetarian would no doubt be a very hard. Most like chocolates, even vegetarians like paul Mccartney.

This reminds me when a friend of mine who is allergic to nuts, read on the back of a bag of KP that it may contain traces of nut due being made in a nut factory. Anyone seen the size of the text? you need a magnifying glass to read what is in your choco bar or can of guzzle soda.
