I think all people should be concerned about taking care of the issues in thier own backyard before wanting to ignore them to bother others about taking care of somebody else.

I am sure if you looked around you would find people within 100 miles of yourself that could use help. It might be simply a small home repair, gardening, errands, transportation ect. Why look to cure some far off lands when thier are people in need in your own backyard? Is it becuase its less noticed??

Lets do what we can to help those in distress around us first, when those around you are not in need seek to expand your ring of assistance after all if your already weak its hard to be much good to others. When strong you are better suited to assist.

Maybe some people think that their neighbour's home repair isn't as important as a kid starving, even though the kid is brown and lives in another country. Fact is, people around you will always be in need of something, but there are degrees of neediness. You could decide that you won't send any money abroad until you've got all the homeless people off the street in your state, but what will that achieve? Your backyard is probably not that bad.

Or, here's a mad thought: why not try helping out both?

It doesn't even have to be equal attention, you just don't have to set it in stone, like "FROM NOW ON, I WILL ONLY LOOK AFTER THOSE IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD". Why not do what you reasonably can for whoever you think needs it? You don't even have to give that much of yourself if you don't want to, it all helps.

Well as usual things were not understood.

As for home repair and such I kinda meant assisting the elderly that can not afford to do for themselves.

Backyard was more of a reference that there is so much around all of us that need our help why do we ignore their needs to go and offer aid to people far off? I dont mean that thier needs be ignored but rather if we can assist the homeless, the needy ect in our own areas. Assist in finding jobs ect to those in need would they not later be able to offer assistance in greater supply later??

As to skin color, your comment is not worth a reply I guess your a biggot. Color does not determine need or the ability to help, thanks for fueling further ignorance in the world.

The opening post certainly seemed to imply that one should take more immediate notice of problems in one's own home/neighbourhood/country than those elsewhere. It was hard to tell what else you could've meant from the wording.

I never said it did. READ.

I do mean to take care of the real needs around them first before branching out further but when you take care of the immediate local needs branch out further and further and further.

Alot seem to want to buy food walk right pass the starving homeless person so they can ship it off to another starving person thousands of miles away. Its great to wish to save a life far off but now the person who was starving in the alley next to the store you bought the food from has died, what sense did that make? You could have gave that food to that person and the moeny it too to ship the fod to the far off land could have been used to buy even more food to assist another and so on. Had you maybe assisted that homeless person and got them on thier feet they too could have joined you to do even greater work.

As for doing physical labor such as simple yard work for the elderly ect would say we all could afford a little bit of our time or help out at a soup kitchen, or volunteer at a something. Little things can lead to greater things and $$$$ is not always the answere.

Anyway just my little protest, I think there is enough suffering in all of our own countries that need immediate attention or life will be lost before we are able to assist others.

I guess some of the reasons people prefer to give money to kids in Africa rather than homeless dudes on their street corner are:

    • They think the homeless dude will spend it on drugs rather than food.
    • They think the homeless dude is more likely to have gotten himself into that position than the African kid.
    • They're used to seeing him every day and he's boring to them.

Gee, I dunno, maybe a desperate attempt to drag a bit of humour back into the world?

The whole Ethiopia deal is a crock. There goverment is not letting them leave for the simple fact that when aid is sent they take a large cut to fatten thier own selves and very little actually makes it to the people who need it. Bastards are making the suffering of others a profit for themselves.

Even the FTC group sucks outlandish salaries that are allowed under the "non profit" clauses. Hell look at what the Red Cross pays its upper management.

I wish alot of goverments from alot of countries would force other parts of Africa to allow the movement of the people so they too have access to good land, good water and a chance of a real life. Fucking politics!
