im packing ym lunch tomooorw and would like to pack a sandwich. i was thinking of just a tomato and lettuce sandwich but id like to add fake meat and cheese but im not sure which brands are good. do any of you have a favorite kind of meat subsitute?
Putting some good hummus on a tomato and lettuce (though I prefer spinach) sandwich is really good. That may not have been what you are looking for but I am tossing ideas out there.
I totally agree with Walker on this one. I (I know it is a bit repetitive) never found any faux meat/cheese that I liked. The cheese is just weird. Actually, so is the fake meat. Anywho, hummus is definately NOT weird. GO FOR THE HUMMUS!!!
My problem with hummus is that it is usually either really really good or really really bad (bad hummus taste like cardboard). If you find a good brand (I like cedar's farm, but there's a much better one at Sam's club, but I forget what it's called) you'll be set. Hook it up with an avocado slice, spinach, cheese, and sprouts on whole grain bread, or whatever you like. Healthy and delicious. or skip the cheese, it's good either way. Does anyone know the hummus I'm talking about? I ate that hummus for a week straight it was so dank. I wish I knew the name. It's the only hummus though they have. (I'd go find out but you need a sam's club card to get in and I borrowed someone else's that day)
Make your own hummus! It's really easy, and you can make it to your taste. Traditionally, hummus contains chick peas, tahini, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt and some kind of spice (cumin, Garam Malala blend, or anything else you like). Personally, I leave out the olive oil and thin out the blend with a little water instead, but it's totally up to you. I just dump ingredients into the food processor until I get what I like. You can also mash chick peas into a courser meal and add Vegenaise and whatever else you might put in tuna to make a different kind of spread. As far as faux meat is concerned, I don't really like any of the deli slices either, but my husband like the Yves products okay. The only cheese that is even a little close to real cheese is Follow Your heart, but Tofutti slices are okay in a sandwich.
I'd go with the hummus too... Make your own, for sure, then you can tailor it to your own tastes. I know this really hot guy who makes his own Mexican inspired hummus... He's the best, uh... It's the best. *grin*
I had a really good brand of hummus once, I think it was called Sabra. I don't know where it was from, I had it a party hah. But yeah the fake meat slices are nasty... I don't like them at all! Veggies work for me
i love hummus but my favorite kind is at my local grocery store. its roasted red pepper hummus and it really is awesome. i ended up going to wawa and getting a veggie sandwich with yellow mustard. not bad but i really would of liked that hummus sandwich i was thinking about in my head.
hummus with rice cheese is wonderful! my favorite. Actually I am having that for dinner tonight. good anytime for me.
Ive actually never had hummus before but since others are raving about it, I am excited to give it a try. I am in love with LightLife's Smart Deli products. Especially their bologna. Mmm. It might taste fake to some, though.
hummus is banging! try the hot peper kind. now i'm hungry and my hummus is at home and i'm not at home.
I had their bologna and it was purple, and disgusting. But cool, you like it. I noticed lately though it's not purple anymore, so maybe they improved it. anything smart brand I've had I didn't like... especially the bacon, but any veggie bacon I've tried has failed. It's just one of those meats you can't fake, b/c it's so greasy and almost totally fat!! can't fake the nasty
i like avocados and tomatoes on a sandwhich thats one of my favorites. avocados have good fats and some protein, and maybe have a handful of nuts and piece of fruit and you have an easy balanced vegan lunch. i do like tofurky slices as well.
Mashing tofu with veganaise and some herbs is delicious. I like it on rye with a slice of veggie mozzerella.
It's spelt 'faux', but yeah. I had morningstar bacon slices; they were pretty good. You could make a BLT sandwich. Though I always went for bacon sarnies (sandwich of white bread, 'bacon', ketchup ... traditional British thing). The only faux meats I tried were quorn deli slices, they were good in their own right and in terms of imitating meat. I've gone off faux meats though, would rather have 'real food' instead. Hummus* is wonderful, smoked tofu is pretty good in sandwiches too. *It's so easy and cheap to make your own, tastes better too. Mine is ... A can of chickpeas (8oz), 2 tbs olive oil, juice of 1 lemon, 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, pinch of cumin (1/4 tsp), 1 tbs soya sauce. Just throw it all in a blender and blitz until smooth. It's only a rough guide really, after a few batches and some tweaking you'll find what works for you. I mean you're 'supposed to' use 2 tbs of tahini, but I leave it out because I don't like it.
I sometimes get Cajun chicken style fake meat slices that really hit the spot. About a dozen (give or take) slices for 2 dollars. Get a baguette for another 2 bucks and some goat cheese for 3 bucks (presidente) or so and you've got a mighty tasty lunch/snack for the next 2 days or so. also, veggie ground (like ground beef) is really good. If you fry the night before (or morning if you have time) put it in a container for later and microwave it just before you want, if you have one, I bet you could make a pretty good sandwich with some melted cheese and vegetables. and slightly beyond what you want, morning star makes some good veggie sloppy joes. But it depends on what you have available to you before your lunch. if it's a picnic, that would be a no go. but again, cooking it beforehand, than microwaving it for a half minute before lunch would do the trick.
