Ever noticed how the morning news is always more detailed, more accurate, and how there are more stories attacking the government. The idea is this. they push out the news in the edition that is least likely to be seen. Its in a form that is edited but the politicians and whatever complain and by the 6 oclock news the story is so sanitised its hardly worth knowing. There is a good reason for this. most people watch the later evening news editions. when people say - we never knew this the authorities say well it was in the news - news at 12 midday gets an audience of some 80,000 people news at six is up top the millions they bury the news in the morning
I have noticed that sometimes I vaguely register a story on the Today programme while struggling into wakefulness, but never hear any more of it later in the day. I remember once back in the Thatcher years, the headlines on News at 10 referred to the Falklands War, but by the time the story came up it was the Falklands "Campaign". Obviously someone from No 10 had been on the blower.
