The unemployment rate drops anyone still looking for work after six months, it's not an accurate figure, it's just something that makes big business feel better.

Gainful/suitable by my definition is work that pays the normal day to day bills. Without the employee having to have more than one job. That means bread, milk, toilet paper not high end vehicles or overpriced home.

The military has become Bush & the neo-con's job generation program.
Indeed, welfare and warfare go hand in hand.

Hey, Lainey, here's your chance to prove you're mature and old enough to kill and yet, still JUST learning to drive. :)

Ever been hungry or looking for job and can't find one. Try reading the link provided by Mandell.

I think government and big business has already investigated and found their source of bodies.

I am all for the increase in minimum wage. The workers hadn't received one in more than ten years while businesses and corporations reaped record profits. Now I find out the worker was granted the raise to make enlistment more favorable. Someday the little man will find a way to screw the big bosses.

You guys making the six figures every year...know what? You can't do it without labor. Most of you puke when you get your nails dirty. Someday the little man will rise up and you will be held accountable. We will refuse to do your dirty work or sell our children out for the wars that only benifit your intersts.

I guess that was the reason Republicans chose to approve it. It looks that way from the article posted. Read the link!

What do you see as the reason todays' youth are enlisting. To spread democracy?

The fact that you are familiar with HD and blueray make you more comfortable in this society than most of the youth that are enlisting. Most of them aren't even aware that in 2009 their parents tvs won't work without expensive conversion boxes...and I don't even know what bluerays are.

Benefits don't equal recompense? Businesses normally compile benefits and pay to come up with overhead for labor costs.

I hope the youth aren't enlisting for promises of gi bill, college reimbursement, because it's been stripped in recent years, and they may serve and find when they go to ask for those benefits they are no longer available. Those are the things like veterans' health benefits that are cut all the time to balance the budget.

Even Vietnam Vet's found what they were promised wasn't what they received.

Well those converters cost 600.00 now. And the deadline is February of 2009.

I had Vietnam Vet friends that thought they had full gi bill college benefits. Guess what they didn't.... congress had limited their benefits.

You're the one that said the youth were joining up in order to gain these benefits, I was only pointing out that what the recruiter promises doesn't always come to fact.

I am not really worried about a better viewing experience I am worried about the current tvs that I own being able to pick up a signal...any signal. I only paid 100.00 for my last tv, so now I need to add a 100.00 box to it in order to pick up a signal in 2009? And I'll need a box for each tv in my home. Glad Colin Powell's son made a mint off of this. That family has a lot to be proud of.

It's easier to be eligable for college scholorships than it is to join the military; technically.

You've never visited a recruiter have you? That's just plain bullshit. The military will take people that can't read, do the colleges now adays stoop that low? Today they will even take convicted felons. We can thank Bush for that.

Enlistment age cut off has been raised from 35 to 42. Does that tell you how desperate this administration is for cannon fodder?

Yes. Actually I have been to a few recruiters. I was rejected because I have hypothyroidism. I was being a bit dramatic by saying it was easier, because the army recruiter actually told me that she would lie about it for me. But I wouldn't be able to take my medication. I've also heard of stories about recruiters helping kids pass drug tests.
What I was trying to get at is that colleges don't descriminate dissabilities. And a hell of a lot of people have certain disqualifications.

Attending college and being handed a weapon and told where and when to kill are two totally different areas of life Thank god. A person that is blind or in wheelchair still has a right to an education.

The fact that the military is lying for drug addicts and accepting minimally functional individuals to train to kill says more about their motives and their vision of society than anything I could write about them.

But seriously, it is very easy to get into college. I don't think it is much to ask for a kid to know how to read ; ) especially as opposed to being able to jog for 5 weeks straight. They make it as easy as possible because of the demand of college experience for high paying jobs. They understand families can not always afford $30K so they give out student loans.
