Alexis will be 8 months old this month and she still hasn't cut the first tooth. She's been teething, it seems like, forever. She just chews and drools and chews. She doesn't use a lot of orajel, so I'm afraid that her teeth aren't even close.
Is it normal or could there be something wrong with her gums?

My daughter didn't cut her first tooth until she was 10 1/2 months old. And the second one came in 3 weeks after her 1st birthday - no, its not terribly uncommon ;)

I was a nanny when I first got pregnant to a baby boy. He was 9.5 months old and got his first tooth in the week before I left them. It's not uncommon. :) And trust me, once it comes, OMG....You'll wish she had no teeth again!

Lol. I was just making sure.
Also, she's really cut back on eating it seems. Could that be due to her teething? She isn't acting unusual or anything. No extra fussiness or acting like she's feeling bad.

The cutting back on eating is probably due to the teething. Leane would always cut back on her food intake right around the time she had a tooth coming through.
And yeah, I was going to say the same thing the others did. Leane didn't cut her first tooth until she was about 7-8 months...then after that, there was an explosion of teeth. The it slowed down again, and now it's picked back up.

has anyone else heard that orajel and the like can cause the little ones tongue to become numb which greatly increases the risk of them swallowing it??

My mom told me something similar...that they swallow a bit and it numbs their throat and affects their gag reflex...

by my 1st bday i had no teeth and no hair. (mom scotch taped barettes to my head so i didn't look like a boy)
the only problem it ever cause me was that my grown up teeth came in super late, so i had to get braces when most kids were getting them off! (around 15 y/o)
    now i'm 30 and pretty normal so i wouldn't worry. ;)

damn, that's a cute picture! she looks like she could kick my butt!

    peace

My sisters kids didn't have any teeth at a year. My daughter was about 10 months when she got her first tooth. My mom says, the longer the teeth stay below the gums, the healthier they will be. Probably a wives tale, but maybe not. . .
I don't think orajel is a good idea. I never used it. Meleah would chew on a frozen washcloth and that seemed to make her happier.
