Anyone else find it amusing/sad that there's so many kids running around saying they're the BIGGEST fan of Floyd, and Roger Waters is their god?

Sometimes I feel bad for being a Floyd fan... I mean, all these kids running around wearing DSOTM shirts who probably don't even know who the hell David Gilmour is. It's like, if you have the prism from DS on a shirt, your website, etc. then you're suddenly "really cool". And then if you ask them what their favourite Floyd album is OTHER THAN DS and The Wall... watch them try and think of another Floyd album! But then again these are the kids that run around saying "DOWN WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT!"

    Maybe I'm too bitter.

I know that kind of kids. Now it's realy popular to be Floyd fan. Everybody has that dark side of the moon T-shirt (even I have one, and one atom heart mother).
If you ask them what is they favorite song...they say...''we don't need no education'' :D lol (at least one ''BIG'' floyd fan said so). Others say another brick in the wall...and some Money.
Most of them don't realy know what is the meaning of their songs. They just read their biography and think they know everything.
Once I fell into the conversation with one ''fan'', and asked her...who is you favorite band member? And surely she said...Roger Waters (like every other) . I personaly like Wright and Gilmour the most. :D

    Cheers.

If I got to pick one to meet and talk/hang out with it would be Nick Mason, def. He seems the most chill and laidback out of the group. Seeing him play with Roger last year was awesome.

I'm admittedly Pink Floyd nazi... my friend was playing brain damage once and forgot to change "lunatic" to "lunatics" and "the" to "my" in the second verse and I jumped straight on him for it. I try not to be but knowing so much about them and spending so much time listening to them makes it an instant reaction to do so. But other than correcting people, I don't let them bother me.

And there's really no sense in wasting your time over the countless "fake" Floyd fans that surround you. They are possibly the biggest band in history, so I'm sure that everyone who likes them isn't going to "get" it that well. Some people just aren't smart enough. As for people who make factual mistakes, who the fuck cares. Just because they haven't heard a certain album doesn't mean that they can't appreciate/understand the music better than you. Most people don't understand Floyd in the slightest... listening to their albums in their entirety(if you skip songs on Darkside or The Wall you're missing the point) over and over and over and endlessly is the only way to completely comprehend their genius. And, unlike me, most people are caught up in having a "life", or their idea of one. I'm just a nerd who sits at home all day and analyzes music. I can talk the chronological order of every album with a fellow "hardcore" Floyd fan but I've also got an answer for every single lyric Roger has written, all the facts and history of Floyd got boring to me a couple years ago.

Every person on earth can enjoy their melodies, though, and why not? Seriously, just don't give a rat's ass about anyone else. Just listen to the music... It may be the world's best-selling album and have quite the poppy quality, but I've gotten things out of Darkside that people can't achieve through church, so everyone else's ignorance is kind of irrelevant to me. Most people who 'listen' to the Dead won't sit through a 45 minute sequence of 7 different songs, let alone a little meltdown jam. I don't care, its their loss.

Uhh.... in conclusion, screw them, just listen, and apologies for the ridiculously long post. My mind's a bit stimulated at the moment.

I don't think he ment kids that actually do love Pink Floyd, but those who just wearing the shirt and act cool. I come across one every now and then myself, but it's just funny (and maybe a little bit sad, but only for them I guess). I can't make a big deal out of it, honestly. Who cares what's the actual reason is why they wear it?

Well, I see what you are saying, boek, but I must add a few of my thoughts. I am not going to say I am the biggest Pink Floyd fan out there (I think I am, but I don't wish to start a debate over that  ), but I do know an awful lot about the band. I have been listening to them my entire life because my father was an ultimate Floyd fan, and I was subjected to their music quite often. So, before I even considered myself a fan, I knew a lot about the band. My entire closet is filled with Pink Floyd shirts. I enjoy collecting them just because I love them. My point is that not everyone wearing a Pink Floyd shirt knows little about the band. My favorite albums are hardly "Dark Side of the Moon," or "The Wall." I have a hard time picking favorites, but I do know "Ummagumma" would be in my top three. Anyway, now I am rambling on. I just wanted to say that there are, of course, younger people who only like to walk around with the "Dark Side of the Moon" symbol on their clothing, but likewise, there are younger people who could write a book about the band.

Are you too bitter? No, I don't think you are. When you truly love a band, it really is an annoyance to see fake fans. Hey, but give them a little bit of credit. At least they're not walking around trying to be "gansters," right :)?

I also must agree with this. I am more annoyed by the people who say "being high is the only way one can appreciate Pink Floyd's music" than by those who only listen to "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall."

so its really cool out there to be into pink floyd? overhere in the netherlands i don't meet to much young people who are into them and most of them really seem to know what they are talking about, though i once met a guy who wouldn't believe there is an album called ummah gummah (which actually was pretty funny). so what would be better? meeting too much people with a DSOTM t-shirt who don't know who syd barrett was or meeting to few who do know more of the history of pink floyd.

Wtf? Since when is it cool to listen to floyd? lol, that's kinda fucked. Only fake fan I have ever met was this g trying to like befriend me cause of how i look and said he loved hendrix. And his favorite song was purple haze.

And btw, syd barret era pf sucks shit through a straw.

I think it's also very uncool to correct people for saynig the instead of my on a song. Srsly dude the performers themselves even mess up the words sometimes.

I'd rather have kids think that it's cool to listen to Pink Floyd than that it's cool to listen to Britney Spears or any other garbage out there.

    Remember, kids...

All of you, yes... all of you... started out being DSOTM fans. Now think about it... remember how powerful that album was when you first heard it, how unique?

Give the kids with the DSOTM shirts a break. For all you know they'll grow up into full-fledged Pink Floyd fans... and if they don't, then oh well.

Agreed, no matter how cliche DSOTM is, its still an excellent and powerful album. So I dont hate on the "fake" Floyd fans, everyone has to start somewhere. When I first started listening to Pink Floyd I knew shit, hell I probably didn't even know Comfortably Numb was on The Wall or that Piper at the Gates of Dawn even existed. But people come along way, especially when your love and interest for a band grows.

I listened to the best Pink Floyd song at my friend's house. It is called One Of These Turns. It's fun to listen to it with the lights off.
