Yesterday at around 4am, the world famous tea clipper was set ablaze in a towering inferno. People have suggested arson. I am with them on that one. I hope whoever did it is caught, prosecuted and made to pay the repair bill. Also they should spend about two years in jail for this. In 2006 some money was set aside to restore the Cutty sark to its former glory. Now the main hull is basically burnt right through. All the wood will have to be replaced and our tea clipper will be atleast 75% original. This is a sad day for Greenwich and perhaps a glorious day for the news teams who swooped in like birds of prey. Itn, BBC, Canadian satelite, Channel four. What are people's views on this tragic event?
Not all the wood will need to be replaced. Last I heard, about 50% of the planking had been removed for some repair work. It's bad, and I hope they catch the chavs that did it, but it's not as bad as it could have been.
we will need sailing ships in the near future , they will return as will the horse the bike and the railway, so I think we should fix her up but to use for transporting people and goods
You can count me out of getting on board jonny - I'll wait for them to add sails to those big cruise liners - thanks. I thought it was a bit sad - ah well some more money will be raised - everything will be ok.
Am I bovvered? , does my face look bovvered? I'm not bothered The cutty sark was just some ship tourists paid money to see like some stupid zombies in a theme park. So what if some ship burnt down. It wasnt my heritage, it was the heritage of whoever scooped up the cash. And the glory of its days was in earning shitloads of cash for people who exploited others. What possible value is there in repairing or restoring it now??
maybe they were too bored and thought, lets have a bonfire. Infact if the organisers were thinking properly they would have sent the fire crews home and charged people £20 to get in and lit some fireworks and roasted some spuds on the flames
yes great title erm ive not really reacted either way. burning down anything that doesnt belong to you is bad stuff, especially something of a historic nature. lucky yes that all its masts etc had been removed for its restoration so minimalising (sp?) damage
£25 million, waste of flippin' money and also the extra £10 million quoted to cover the loss. Come on.
I think the point was that they created this myth that the cutty sark was integral to British history (this was back in the 1930's) then they charge shitloads of dosh for people to look at this masterpeice of colonialism and try to imagine themselves on the open sea in the cutty sark - hmmm not my idea of a day out but I think it made the owners rich and then when numbers of tourists started falling they passed it on to a heritage trust as by then the gov had eaten the salesmens shit and believed it was a great historical object my point is that the cutty sark was there to trap tourist dollars in a pile of colonial bullshit
