I saw this film there about two weeks ago, anyone seen it? I'ts thoroughly fucked up but absalutely incredible. It stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harelson and Rory Cochrane. It looks amazing, it's shot in real time and then cell shaded into animation. Basically it's about drugs, suveilance, loss of privacy and paranoia. It's an adaption of a Philip. k. Dick novel, written and directed by Richard Linklater but is more humurous than the book while still maintaining a very dark and sometimes menacing feel. If you like sureal gems of films you should love this. I'd say if you liked Fear and Loathing then you will probably be into this, well worth a watch.
I thought it was ok, just entertaining. I think it bothered me how much attention it got and the only reason I could find for it was ohh it's about drugs... You guys should watch Waking Life, if you havent.
yeah and that too.. but I'm talking from people who dont even know who he is. I blame them for ruining it for me.. WHen I hear people over and over and over saying a movie it's cool and the constant mentioning it.. it kinda losses its magic... not saying it was bad, it was interesting and ok.. would like to read the book tho.
man, i was going to watch it the other day when it was on TV but i had to work so i missed it 8(, from what i hear its a good movie, and i saw i little bit of it and it looked cool, so i'll just have to rent it i guess, no big deal though
It made me want to read the book because of how it was filmed. I love linklater's shit though. This movie kinda droned on and confuses the person, I'm not sure if that was the intention (due to it being based around a confusing type drug, I dunno) but it wasn't bad. Definately better than the average. I thought waking life was so much better though. It changed how I look at things.
I felt the same way about it. Droned on with the sci-fi and paranoid language until you couldn't understand what was going on anymore. I also thought Waking Life was better. For everyone who liked the movie - Please read the book. It is a thousand times better. In print, the plot moves more smoothly, the dialogue has context and the political and philosophical messages come across so much easier...
it was truly trippy - i loved the bugs he was freaking out over and his mate saying yeah, yeah just put em all in a jar and bring em over...like, "ho hum, there he goes again..."
Have you seen "Waking Life"? the same guy made it and I thought the concept of that movie was wayyyy cooler than scanner darkly, You should watch it. I still think "A Scanner Darkly" was fuckin great though.
^ well A Scanner Darkly was an adaptation, not an original work but I've only heard about Waking Life, and really wanna see it
I thought this movie looked amazing, was very stylish. but the storyline just lost me. i wasn't interested in what happened to any of the characters. but hey, it looked 'cool'
You know I liked this movie at first and it definitely gave me a creepy feeling so the mood was good. But firstly, Keanu Reeves really isn't a good actor so I don't know why they gave him the main role... the guy in the beginning was a cooler actor and character, I kinda wished they had focused on him more. And also a lot of things in the movie didn't make any sense... I was kinda disappointed with this movie. Richard Linklater really isn't a good writer, he has some great ideas but he needs to execute them better in my opinion... he also needs to stop this rambling writing of his man. The rambling in a Scanner Darkly did not interest me or make any sense to me honestly. Waking Life was good though and I could get what they were rambling about in that, but still the writing wasn't perfect.
