I started my dreads just 2 days ago and they are already looking pretty good, I just have a few quick questions...
I know a lot of you don't rubberband yours, but I did the ends (tips) so that they'd hold together a little better; do you think that is a bad idea?
Also, wondering how many of you had really straight hair before dreading, because a guy I work with (who has realllllly long dreads) told me that it is really hard/might not work because I have straight hair...but they are already starting to work so I don't know what he is talking about, lol.
    Thank you!
I have to work tonight but I will post pictures as soon as possible!
    I love this forum!
    :D

My mate Paul put bands on the ends of his dreads and they turned out fine. I've recently played with the crochet hook to fix up the tips, but with little luck, but if it gets any better I'll let you know. I'm roughly in the same place as you.

Straight hair has proven to be a problem with me. I have straight hair and it takes a lot of time and effort to keep them together, maybe because I got them done wrong or something. Just keep working at them and they should be okay. And don't cut them off if they're not going the way you want them to, I almost did and realised I could've made a huge mistake.

    Time, patience and work.

I had straight hair and it worked perfectly, I make dreadlocks on other people too and straight hair is not a problem. Take a look at my website www.rastalove.tk (it's in dutch) and click on 'echte dreads'. About the tips, if you don't want rubber bands on them, just twist and rip them, if you do this often they'll just stay in, and you don't need bands.

My hair was straight too, very fine as well. It's been dreading just fine, and I never used bands (I like loose tips though)
    It'll work fine, I wouldn't worry about it. =)

Y'know what's great? Stick your head out the window of a moving car. :p

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Here are some pictures of me (not the best photos since it is 11 at night) but nonetheless it shows the general idea...they aren't really even halfway done yet, just a little knotted up and tied off, but tomorrow I don't have to work so friends are going to stop by all day and help me work on them :D
    I am very excited!
    Uhmm...yay!
The top looks best coz those are the only ones we really even worked on a little bit...anyway, if you have any advice, I'd love to hear it!

The roots look great, you've got them all separated well. I've been cursed with cross overs, bits of hair that have come out of one dread and knotted up in another.

Hahah, you guys are funny. I do look sort of like her though.
Hmm...so I can't seem to find anyone who wants to help me roll my dreads. A bunch of friends said they'd help, but we're always busy at different times so I HOPE that today we can get at least a few more started...
oh, and this girl (who follows me around everywhere) at school copied me and started dreading her hair last night...so now people are like "Why is EVERYONE dreading their hair suddenly?" And it sucks because it makes me look like I did it just to be cool or something...so I have to tell them that I did mine first and she did hers after she saw mine...Ugh. Hate it when people copy me. I mean I wouldn't care if she got dreads, but c'mon, the very next day?
Urggh, kind of upset about that, but I guess I'll get over it...

    What a hoe.

I reckon you should just be aloof. People will pick up on that and just know.

I wanted mine for about a year and I wanted them for spiritual reasons so I felt like I needed to wait until I felt spiritually "secure" enough with them...
Id imagine a lot of people who decide to get them overnight end up taking them out or something.

It has been about 5 days now...today my friend fixed up a bunch of them for me that were kinda just tied up...I came home and put bands up by my roots because they were SOOO loose at the tops and I just felt like it wasn't going to work if I didn't rubber band them...hopefully that will work out alright. For some reason I feel like they are ultra loose, but maybe it is just because I am really excited to be getting them finally and I'm beginning to realize how much time it is going to take for them to look like actual dreads. I was also thinking that maybe it is just because they are so short... Anyway, I still love them so much! I'm so excited for my hair to grow! Ugh, I am mad that I cut it all off like half a year ago, it would have been the perfect lengh for dreading too!
    Nonetheless...
Here are some pics...don't mind my fucked up look...I have no idea why my eyes look so messed up in that picture coz I didn't even smoke today!
    LOL
