I live here, but am certainly not a Floridian. I live on the west coast about an hour south of Tampa. Shouldn't be bad, but ya never know. People are freaking out though, which they probably should to an extent.
I live in what they call "Tornado Alley" in Kansas, but I'm not from here either. Everyone else freaks out when the storms come. While they're all huddled int thier basements, I go out on the front porch and watch.
I always hated minnesota because the tornado whistle would go off like every other day and there'd be no tornado....
This one will be a dousey, that's for sure. Charlie actually passed within about 20 miles of my house, yet you'd never have known it. If you're on the west side of the storm, the winds are significantly less, which we were for Charlie and looks like we will be for Frances. This sucker is a monster though, so ya never know.
I've been here just over three years and I still haven't seen one tornado, but they've been touching down all around where I live. I never get to have any fun .
You know in all honesty, I was pretty pumped up for when Charlie came through and was a bit let down that from where we were at, it wasn't any great shakes. Honestly, by the way the crow flies, my house is 20 miles from where it hit the hardest and I might have lost a couple of leaves off the trees in my yard. We were all like, 'that was it? ?' Ofcourse 24 hours later we found out 27 people had died, 7 Billion in damage was done and thousands were without homes. As much as I find storms exciting and would like to experience the 'fun' of that, it hits home when you see so many people lose everything. The latest news says it has been downgraded to a category 3, which is good - but even still, considering that its about five times the size of Charlie in terms of surface area, its gonna wreak havoc. Shit, 20% of the Citrus Fruit product was ruined by Charlie. This could be bad, I'm glad people are taking the precautions they are.
Shit, Florida really takes a beating on a pretty regular basis, doesn't it? Why do people keep living there? You'd think no one would be able to get home owners insurance by now.
Actually Florida doesn't at all in comparison to many places. The Carolinas get hit far worse than here, Texas does to. Andrew was obviously the worst hurricane in terms of monetary damage this country had ever seen, but that was in 1992. The last time a hurricane even close to the size of Charlie hit on the west coast of Florida was in 1960. Having two storms of this magnitude hit the state in one year is completely a freak of nature. I guess this year, when it rains it pours.
I just read an article in National Geographic about the damage done to the ecosphere thaks to our awsome environmental policies. These are just the early symptoms. It's gonna get a lot worse. And from what they can tell (according to the mag) We're no longer in a position to fix the damage. We now live in a big out-of-control science experiment. Thank you, GW!
Im from Miami. I remember when Andrew hit. I was only 11, but I remember my dad driving me all around Homestead to see the damage. It was so sad....but I was thankful that nothing happened to our home except our palm tree fell over. Im not in Miami right now, but most of my family still are. I will just be praying that nothing happens to my grandmother's home.........
How macho. It would be really funny to see one actually coming at you, you'd probably run, crying like a little girl...
My stepdad is a snowbird (with his girlfriend). Happened that they have a house somewhere around in there in Florida. It's like a park thing. They were upset and couldn't find out what had happened when Charlie broke. So, they took a plane and went to see. They called us all unhappy, so I said the house is down? They no. So, I said, wtf??? Well, it turned out that every house is down except theirs so, they felt like shit about it...
the storm lost 25 mph worth of wind over night and continuing to weaken...its looks like this hurricane is gonna be a kiters dream btw, i'm only here because as a moderator, i got all these reports of nasty posts and so the sheriff is here to do his thing
omg...............im waiting for this big as* storm and im not looking forward to it either.im on the west coast........eek!
so i just heard on the news that this new storm has gone back up to a strong 3 and could even be a 4.they are saying its gonna take 24hrs to cross florida and if it exits into the west waters that we'll have 80+mph winds...hurricane force winds gusting up to 125mph
I'm far from macho. I'm not bragging - it's not like I'm chasing the tornados, I'm sitting on my front porch. There's a big difference. I'm just the curious type. I've always loved storms, so what if I want to see the tornado that's going to blow my house down? I'll have time to get back inside and undercover before it hits. I'm crazy, but I'm not stupid, despite what my sig says.
i live in central florida, it's definitly losing power and speed. but it still's gona suck. i know if my power goes out for more than a day, someone's getting it. i know last time people's power were down for a couple weeks. but hopefully they were smart and kept all the restoration teams down here from around the country, so it should be faster.
i live in florida. in boca raton. the hurricane looks huge. but from what ive been hearing its really only going to be strong winds and rain for boca and neighboring areas.
