I've dyed wool with kool-aid and food colouring, it works well :)

Best way to do it, I've found, is soak wool or natural fiber yarn in dye and 'squish' it to get all the air bubbles out, so it soaks and dyes more evenly. Let it sit for about 2 or 3 minutes, remove from dye, squeeze out any excess but leave a little dye in, put it in a microwave safe bowl, and nuke it for 5 minutes. Let it cool off by air, don't run it under cold water or it will felt. Then just let it dry by hanging it or leaving it out for a few hours.
