So I've recently become very interested in rock from the mid to late 60's to the end of the 70's..........too bad i grew up in the 90s. I have music from all of the most well known bands, but what are some of the lesser known, but just as talented ones? Thanks...and I am making this very broad because I want to learn or many bands.

I think this site could help you find what you want. It works a bit like a radio, but you can type in a band you like and he'll give you similar bands.

if it's proggy stuff you're into you probs already have pink floyd
    SO.....

King Crimson: legendary brit prog/experimental/heavy metal group with revolving lineup(I recomment Larks Tongues in Apic and RED)

Can: German jammming grooving leaders of the 'Krautrock' movement (Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi are fairly popular)

Yes: very epic if slightly dated (in a fun way) sounding brit prog (Fragile, Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans are all fun)

Jethro Tull: folkier hard edged prog (Aqualung is my favourite)

Mahavishnu Orchestra: Jazz-Rock/Prog (Birds of Fire and Inner Mounting Flame are cool)

Genesis and ELO are also popular but I am not very familiar
The Doors and Rush are also slightly proggy but both more mainstream rock

also if you are coming at this from a comfort zone of more modern rock some proggier modern bands might suit you:
    The Mars Volta
    Tool
    Muse
    (all very cool)

oh yes and if you are feeling adventurous look out for:
Acid Mothers Temple (japanese experimental rock collective with revolving lineup and various names)

theres loads of progressive music . ye just gotta discover
    heres a preview though :

Proto-Prog: (the first bands to use some progressive elements): THE best band to check out in this category, in my opinion, is The Moody Blues, also Procol Harum ... In Held Twas in I is a great song, made in 1968, and 17 minutes long. it is known to be the first "prog epic"

Symphonic Prog : Yes (although I dont like Yes, they are one of the most, or THE most important symph prog band, King Crimson (In the Court of the Crimson King is a must have), Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis (I highly recommend their first albums before the departure of Peter Gabriel),

One of the lesser known symphonic prog bands that i love the most, even more then the popular ones. is Camel, check out The Snow Goose.

Of course there are tons more bands, but Im just giving the essential, Gentle Giant is also a great band, but they're more "complicated" to listen to. But theyre fuckin geniuses if ye ask me.

Canterbury Scene : (in my opinion, is the best prog-rock genre, usually a blend of symphonic, psychedelic, jazz fusion) my favorite from that category is Gong, great space prog/jazz fusion, with lots of wimsical songs. theyre really different from anything else. Soft Machine--> AWESOME
Caravan --> AWESOME Khan --> Very Good Matching Mole --> very good

but like I said, there's lots more.. Im just writing down the ones I know the most, and that I enjoy the most, and that i own at least one record or album of (im a die hard prog fan, especially the psychedelic prog)

Jazz fusion: (Im not that familiar with this category) although Mahavishnu Orchestra is umbelievable, great virtuosos. Colosseum is as well AWESOME.
Its really a genre worth it to discover.

Psychedelic and Space/Rock: (Another one of my fave prog-rock sub-genres)

Of course Pink Floyd, mostly their early years fit in this genre, until DSOTM. Ummagumma, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother... all must-haves.
Much less popular is Hawkwind, but i FUCKIN love em. Nektar, Porcupine Tree ( new band from UK very pinkfloydesque ) Someone already mentionned Acid Mother's Temple, but in my opinion... Ive heard 2-3 albums and it is terrible, it's just someone sleeping on a synth, with bunch more of useless doodling, a 4yr old kid could accomplish their music. Brainticket--> very weird music, but good Algarnas Tradgard--> Weird but very good

theres many more that i just cant remember. and of course many more that i just dont know of.

Krautrock: (I love this genre as well, very psychedelic and weird)

CAN ... man Ive tripped so many times on this music, and oh lord do I love it... I have so many albums, and theyre all amazing. Bizare psychedelic, sometimes dreamy , and yet still very progressive.
Amon Duul II...lol once again, ate lots of shroomies on this music... its just way freaky, check out Yeti, the improvisation songs are mindblowingly freaky, this is music that makes you reach states of mind beyond amazing.
Ash Ra Tempel... lol again... fuckin awesome, check out Schwingungen and Seven-Up. Timothy Leary helped em recording Seven-Up. real cool, and of course with Leary in there, ye know its psychedelic, they tried their best to represent LSD through music, and it worked. long spacey psychedelic journeys.
Faust... a little boring, GOOD, but it's really different, too different.

Zeuhl: (this is a prog genre of its own, jazzy weird stuff, created by the band Magma, its the only Zeuhl band i know, and its AWESOME)

Experimental: (recent prog rock, experimental music)
Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt Zion, Mogwai.... Im not describing them seperately, cause really, just one band of experimental post prog music is enough, its all the same... but if ye wanna check it out, Godspeed is the way to go...

theres different genres, but those are thes ones i could most easily tell about. good luck on your prog route man.

http://www.progarchives.com/ has loads of bands on there, not sure how many you'll be able to find though! Also Neu are a good band, sort of like Can. I think a few of their members used to be in Kraftwerk, check them out too.

Lunavelis is an alt-prog-punk-indie rock band started in 2005 by Cleveland-native multi-instrumentalist, engineer, and producer Chris Feran. Influenced heavily by contemporary British rock, imported teas, and days of sleeplessness, Lunavelis delivers a cinematic soundscape of lushly produced layers of guitars, synths, orchestras, and vocal harmonies.

These guys have an amazing sound live and you can check them out at Lunavelis.com or myspace.com/lunavelis.

You should check out"The Power of the Picts" by "Writing on the wall".
    It's a bit obscure but I think it's a great phsycedelic/prog album.

If anyone hasn't reccomended them already, Anglagard is brilliant. They're some swedish band who recorded two albums and reunited for a live one. Very small catalouge but what they do have is great.
