So are there any countries that have legalized marijuana and have had no negative consequences? Or even positive consequences?

in fact, as of aug 1st, you will be fingerprinted, and your photo taken when buying at coffee shops to ensure you're 18.

Not quite - These silly internet rumours spread by kids start off realistic and get more and more ludicrous as time goes on. Every year there's always one that says from 1st January foreigners won't be allowed to buy...

From september and starting in august what you said will happen in Maastricht, a town close to the german, french and belgian borders and as a result is very popular with people nipping 10mins across the border (and being europe it's all open, no passport control or border guards or anything) to buy their weed then bopping back. In Maastricht 11 of its 26 coffeeshops have been closed in the last 5 years. They are never allowed to open again and no-one else is allowed to apply for a new license, those shops are permanently gone and none will replace them. This is due to a police crackdown on, amongst other things, selling to minors and selling more than 5g per customer per day. They will scan your fingerprint and your ID/passport getting rid of all info apart from your DOB, even your name. The info won't be sent elsewhere and the fingerprints are of not high enough quality for police use. This scheme is imposed by the coffeeshops and not the police/government in order to keep their licenses and not lose their liveliehoods. It has been reviewed by the Dutch digital privacy watchdog who say it's acceptable and not overly intrusive (and remember they have a very strict attitude to individual privacy)...

This is only in Maastricht remember, because of it's proximity to three other countries borders and the pressure from the governments of said countries to stop people being able to buy weed freely.

If it means more coffeeshops don't lose their licenses then I'm all for it.

I was in Amsterdam two weekends ago, my seventh trip, and not once did I hear mention of these rule changes or any other rule changes for that matter (outside of Maastricht) and much time was spent alone talking to budtenders and the like... The only thing I did notice this time was that they seemed to be a lot harsher on asking kids for ID than I'd seen in the past, saw many groups of kids getting turned away. Good. It's not worth risking their license so some kid can have a joint and you're being selfish if you're underage and attempt to buy weed in C/S.

Some states have it decriminalized to the point where they wont arrest you, but they will fine you. Oregon and California are a couple. Just check www.norml.com

it's still illegal in Canada. It hasn't been decriminlized yet. It almost was, and if it was you'd be right. THen an election came by and it was taken off the table never to be heard of again.

Usually if you get busted the cops just take it away. If arrested, you go to court, say you're sorry, and they'll let you go, depending on how much.

However, it is still illegal. Unfortunately.

It sure isn't legal here in Oregon, but if you get stopped with pot, you sure won't ever do any time. You'll just get a hefty fine depending on the quantity your caught with.

A kid (college student) here got busted with growing over 400 plants and all they did was give him a ticket and told him when and where to show up to court....he had to go to school, so they let him go.

    I love it here. :spliff:

Oh yeah, medicinally, marijuana is legal here in oregon as long as you have the proper medical papers, your card/cards and they are all up to date.
If stopped while having pot all that will happen is they will confinscate your stuff and be on their merry way.
No ticket and zero jail time.

Under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CSDA) which is the main FEDERAL law that determines which drugs are legal and illegal in Canada, Cannabis is illegal to possess, traffic, import/export and produce. There are no state laws per se but some provinces have DEPRITORIZED cannabis so that it is least important offense that law enforcement is supposed focus on. As far as growing goes... the conservative Canadian government has found it easier to allow building inspectors and fire fighters to raid grow-operations and deem them unsafe and shut them down (and also give growers hefty fines) so that the cases never have to go to court and they can shut down grows.

In the United States the Controlled Substance Act which is essentially regulated by the DEA is the FEDERAL law that schedules cannabis as a schedule 1 prohibited substance which means that according to FEDERAL law it has no medicinal value and is illegal to possess, traffic, import/export and produce along with various other state and municipal laws (which increase punishments for violating the FEDERAL law) make it illegal in all 50 states. California along with about dozen other states have legalized MEDICINAL marijuana and some states have even decriminilized the recreational use of marijuana however federal law overrides state law and according to Gonzalez (or Ashcroft) v. Raich the supreme court decided last summer that the FEDERAL government can use the DEA to legally shut down grows and arrest growers/patients in states that have legalized medicinal marijuana.

Amsterdam and all of the Netherlands tolerate recreational cannabis use but it is not legalized. Jamaica tolerates cannabis use for tourists but it is not legal and lots of local jamaicans are incarcerated under cannabis laws.

There actually is no country in the world that has completely legalized marijuana whether we are talking recreationally or medicinally. On an international level this is what the U.N. has to say about medical marijuana:

"While using marijuana for medical purposes could not be excluded, the scientific research in several countries so far has not produced conclusive evidence of medical usefulness of marijuana. As long as there is no scientific evidence approved, for example, by the World Health Organization, marijuana remains listed among strictly controlled substances as stated in the convention." -- (1/02)

I believe, to some extent, medicinal marijuana is legal somewhere in Canada, most likely BC or Ontario
