So, Alexis has had ear infections since she was born and has been playing with her ears constantly lately. I figured she had another one. So, I took her to the ped. and he said it was due to teething....then he looked at her gums.
They're red and slightly swollen. How much longer until her teeth sprout? Should I take her to the dentist as soon as she gets them or is there a certain age I can wait for?
And, is diaper rash common with teething? I asked the ped but he never really answered that question. I've tried Desitin and Balmex and even Butt Paste. Nothing is working and she isn't eating any new foods.

It could be hours, or it could be days. That tooth could be taking it's sweeeeeet time. And it's so hard to watch your baby in pain like that. :(

Teething can cause butt-rash. She's drooling a lot more and that drool will reek all kinds of havoc on her digestive system, and thus, her rear end. Air her out as much as possible, with nakey time or cloth diapers. :)

*hugs* for the momma and *teethy vibes* for the girl, formerly known as gums (as soon as that tooth sprouts ;))

If the Butt Paste didn't work than like hippiefreak said, fresh air is the best thing. Keep her little tussy free to air out as much as possible. Teething can do all kinds of things and it can go on for weeks with no sign of those little toofers. All you can do is keep her comfortable, dry bottom, dry top (from all the drooling), Hyland's if she seems to be in pain. It's funny, some kids drool and have rashes and cry for weeks and weeks and other kids give you no warning, just all at once there is a tooth. I wouldn't worry about a dentist for a while. I think most people recommend age 2. Just remember to brush every day, especially before sleep. You can just wrap a piece of guaze around your finger and wipe her teeth with that at first. They also make a little tooth brush that slips over your finger that you can use. You can start either of these even before she has teeth to keep her gums clean. And no flouride in the toothpaste at least until she knows how to spit it out. (I wouldn't even use it then, but that's my opinion.) Swallowing flouride is not good for anyone. Use a baby toothpaste or a training toothpaste. I know Gerber makes one and I think Oral B makes one.

My babies get diaper rash with every tooth. I let my baby have nakey time for an hour or so before her bath and it goes away fast with just the air. Balmex works for her, but never worked for my son. I used the original Desitin with him, but that is no good for cloth diapers, plus it stinks. As for when they will pop out, it could be tomorrow, it could be a month from now. For a couple of teeth, Mavi's gums were swollen for a couple of months before they would finally push thru (those were 1st year molars). With Ayla, she doesn't seem to suffer as bad, she will cry the day the teeth come in, then she is fine. She has two teeth now. Good luck, I hope they cut soon!

Also, have you tried Hyland's Teething Tablets. You can buy them in the pharmacies, and they are all natural relief for teething. They help us a lot when she is ultra fussy.

We use Bag Balm on our baby's red bottom. It works well and doesn't leave a white mess all over his butt.

have you tried penaten cream? We swear by that stuff, Leane has almost never had a rash. If you try it, just slather her bum in it till it's all white. It should clear up in about an hour or two.
As for the dentist thing, I was told that Leane didn't have to come in till around 4 years old by a few different dentists.
    *hugs* to both of you

I took my son to the dentist for the first time when he was 3 because he injured his gums. My dentist is very sensitive to kid's needs and not letting them get a fear of the dentist. So they just looked in his mouth a few times to make sure he was okay and scheduled his first cleaning. They gave him some prizes for being a good boy, so he was excited to go back. With the first cleaning, he was a little skittish so they just ended up brushing them. Again, they didn't want to put him thru any trauma. Then right before he was 4, he fell again and injured his mouth. I took him in for a cleaning and to have the injury checked and he did amazing. They were able to get x-rays to make sure no damage was caused to his adult teeth. They were also able to do a real cleaning and polishing. I was shocked that he wasn't scared at all and listened to what they told him to do. I think it was good to take him at 3 just to give him a little experience, without anything major. As for brushing, I brushed his teeth as soon as he got them with one of those finger brushes with no-flouride toothpaste. I also now brush my 7 month old daughter's teeth. Unfortunately, even though I have taken care of my son's teeth, his front 3 are gray now from his injuries. I feel so bad because it looks like he has rotten teeth.

alot of time. when a child doesn't have enough calcium in his teeth as a baby which is caused my the mother getting sick (ie. a fever, cold any immune system depletion) during pregnancy the teeth tend to get Grey or rot. it has nothing to do with teeth brushing or sugar (but that could also be a cause)

My son's gray teeth were very obviously caused by injuries. He banged his gums and within days they turned gray. The dentist told me that it is very common, he sees it happen a lot. The teeth are just no longer viable, but they would not put a child thru the trauma of pulling them since they will fall out eventually anyway. I hope he's more careful with his permanent teeth.

yeah, our denist does the same thing as jgirl's. I was asking about what would happen at Lea Lea's first visit, and they were telling me how they take them on a tour, give them a toothbrush and a couple other prizes, meet everyone there, and just be shown how to brush her teeth properly by the denist himself. The a while later, we go back and they do a gentle cleaning. Plus, we have one of those denists with big TVs on the roof, so I'm sure that'll be a cool feature for when she goes, lol...I just remember staring up a big flouecent (sp?) lights....oy
