And I really need some advice...I've made already a thread on if I'd look good with them. People said I would, my friends said I wouldn't. But yeah, I'm wanting to know if someone can give me advice on how to prepare, maintain the look. think if I should do fat locks or skinny ones. I'm really not wanting to procrastinate and wait till last minute. My hair reaches to my eyes right now, I'm waiting one more month. I'm wondering what preperations i'm needing to take. I've already decided I'm not going to do it myself cause i'd probably fuck up, I'm thinking I'm going to get it professionally done, but afraid that they will use wax. I believe not using wax makes dreads way better. Just any useful information is needed, I've read over the forum and got a general idea, but anything and everything would help.. thanks so much girls/guys. Peace && love.
take the next five weeks and wash with residue free shampoo every week. it will help prepare your hair for it. don't get them "professionally done" unless you really got to. there is no such thing as a professional dreadlock guy. i did mine myself. and if they don't use wax, they will use gel. so try doing them yourself or get a few buddies. as far as fat or skinny, they will change shape and thickness by themselves. so just backcomb em, leave em, love em, blah blah blah
Well the only reason I say "professionally done" is because I am 100% positive I wont do them good. I can prob get a few guys to do it. And thanks so much for the advice Adrein. And whats the deal with all these people having the expression "o thats nasty" "ewww, that'll look gross" "thats stupid" Why do people hate on dreads so much. I love the idea.
They hate 'em cause they don't understand them/misinformed about them. And I saw your other thread - I think you'll look great, dreads really do look good on just about everyone. "Professionally done".. just have a friend help ya' dude, there's no skill to backcombing. Just lots and lots of patience. Really there isn't, ya' can't fuck it up. Knots are knots. If by fuck up you mean they won't all look the same or they'll be bumpy etc etc... that's the point I really really reccommend you don't do it "professionally", waste of money. And in reality, is anyone actually 'pro' at doing a natural hairstyle? And like Adrien said, they do change in time. Quickly too! Oh man it's awesome to see how they change each day Before I found this place I was gonna 'get it done' too, (with wax ohmy!) - but then I was introduced here.. and I am SO much happier I did them myself! It makes you even more proud of and attached to them. (& I spent $20 instead of $100+)
Yeah I understand. Trust me, I definitely need to save on the money. But I guess I'm just worried that in due time, if I didn't pay the extra little bit to have someone thats used to doing it do it for me, then they won't look as good. But I totally understand that your saying. Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that. Do you think you could write on here or private message me with a full step analysis? Thanks so much everyone.
I don't really know if you can truly mess up with dreads. It's been my experience (and I'm in no way an expert) that dreads will always do their own thing. It takes a while (months) for them to look really good. In the beginning it's a give or take. The thing to remember is not to give up on them. Everyone, it seems, who have dreads went through the "rough stages" where many people give up. Those who don't give up get beautiful dread when they mateur. Yes, some do better than others...but that's because each person is different and so is their hair. I wish you the best of luck hon. Don't forget to post pics when you do them. *hugs* Jess
Don't worry, I will... Thanks so much for the positive comments. Such a proud guy when I say hipforums is my home.
you know what makes dreads even better then not putting wax in them...not getting them "professionally " done. let them have a personality. :sombrero:
