A NEW British Day bank holiday is to being called for by ministers. Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly and Immigration Minister Liam Byrne are drawing up plans for the extra break, which will celebrate what it means to be British. It is thought PM-in-waiting Gordon Brown could rubber stamp the plans for the new holiday as one of his first acts when he takes power. Advertisement The move would be popular with unions. The TUC has been campaigning for the day as Britain has fewer public holidays than any other EU country. In a speech last year, Mr Brown urged Labour supporters to "embrace the union flag". America, France and Australia all have national days. Later today the Government will outline plans to make it harder to gain British citizenship. Mr Byrne said: "We need to make it clearer that citizenship isn't something simply handed out but something that is earned." http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/06/05/plans-for-brit-day-bank-hol-89520-19246948/
We're not fooled by you Gordon! We know you're trying to bribe us with your new Bank Holiday. Of course, we'll like it and go with it anyway, but don't think this gives you brownie points!
Brownie points! Hahahahahaha!!!! Where's the best part of the year for it though.. People seem to go on a downer between Summer (August) Bank Holiday and Christmas... But St George's Day is the only choice.. All those Bank Holidays close together :H
what about building society holidays man whats wrong with building societies ..........and why are they called bank holidays ?
we REALLY celebrate that one, too. i even have a leprechaun costume that i wear to the bar to get free beer. no one has any idea what the hell st. patty's day is and we don't care. it's BEER NIGHT!!!
REALLY? what about the 4th of july and thanksgiving?!!! are you saying you don't celebrate those, too?!
Yeah we celebrate the 4th July, it's the day we got rid of the shitty bits of the Empire. We also celebrate Thanksgiving, we give thanks for all the natives we slaughtered in the name of civilisation. Nothing like a bit of genocide for a public holiday....
