Ok, somewhere along the line an omni has gotten it to your advantage: tell yer tales and give 'em credit! mine: waiter at a Thai restaurant in Dublin, CA automatically asked if eggs were OK when I ordered veggie. I was stunned and left my own tip on top of the payer's tip. He also brought out a small bowl and said, this is the vegan "fish" sauce, without me asking.
i think you just elicited a WOW from many of the young/ still living with parents veggies! yes, she rocks! tell her we said so!
My friend :"I totally respect your decision and understand. I just couldnt do it myself" <---now THAT is something id love to hear more My boyfriends mum is also really great about it and cooks big vegan meals at christmas
Oh and of course my boyfriend was the greatest omni ive ever known back in the day before he made the switch...he listened, and listened, and totally saw what i meant
I've had a few recently A lady behind me in the grocery store - she saw my food on the belt, and asked "Are you a vegetarian?" I told her yes I was, and she said, "Wow, that all looks so GOOD and... HEALTHY!!!" Another one I thought was sweet was someone at Taco Bell about a month ago. After placing my order, (tostada, side of rice & small Baja Blast) the cashier said "You must be a vegetarian - that is SOOO cool!" And a lady at my church is constantly asking me for advise on how to get her kiddies to eat a few more vegetables. Her questions always begin with "Since you know your veggies so well and are such a great cook I thought you might know..." Makes my day when I don't feel like I have to defend myself. love, mom
^^hear, hear! No one has ever made the connection with me at Taco Bell. Tostada no cheese add guac. and Baja Blast is a secret shame of mine, too! my omni son likes the crunchwrap without meat ( don't know what it is called, I make him order while I scout a table).
Once when I went to a Pot Bellies sandwich place I ordered a Vegitarian sub and she asked me I if I was Vegitarian, She said baisically along the lines of "Wow, Thats so cool" It was a while ago so I dont remember it veary well.
I've had a couple of people tell me that they admire my "strength" because they could never do it. I tried to show them how easy it was, but they're still eating meat. My mom and dad are also very understanding. When I come home my mom always has a big vegan meal with vegan dessert waiting for me. Tonight it was a vegan acorn squash rice bowl with quinoa-applesauce cake. So good.
I love it when I get asked "why?" I'm a vegan...it may not seem like much, but it shows that they are interested...and not just dismissing the entire idea completely as being foolish, unhealthy, or stupid.
My father (normally kinda uptight, and conservitive) told my grandparents, and my mother that it was ok that I didnt eat meat, and that he respected me. He also ordered chinese for us one night, and listen and asked what I wanted and would, and didnt want to eat.
I made [vegan] chocolate orange muffins from a 'postpunk kitchen', and my hardcore family totally loved them. My mother, who was totally horrified at the thought of me going vegan, even said she could quite happily eat vegan baked goods instead of omni ones. I really like those comments, and think it's the best kind of activism. Just sharing with people and encouraging them to think more positivly about veg*anism.
Are you kidding me? I wish my parents cooked for me. My mom finds veg recipes and prints them out for me when she's at work.
The PPK just rocks. I veganized a Moosewood recipe (kinda, I change everything) using Isa tips and I get raves on it. Reading Vegan with a Vengence made me think, hey, that lime bread would be great in cupcake sizes.... It is the "please bring your dessert to our potluck" dish.
