I was just flicking through the channels because I was bored...got to channel 4 and what did I see? Fucking pictures of Princess Diana/the crash... Mate, I didn't need to see that, even if I was only flicking.
So they actually did it.. The only gawking I will be doing over this is to watch out for the viewing figures for that programme. I serioulsy hope it doesn't open the door to more insensitive crappy "documentaries".. And just when Channel 4 were making some good ones too
I caught about half of it, I thought it was quite tastefully done. There were no shocking images, the faces were blanked out, just a few fuzzy black and white pictures of the car taken on the night. The documentary itself was an analysis of the rush to blame the photographers when the evidence seems to suggest that they were a huge distance away from the accident and could not possibly have caused it. The most likely culprit is the drunk driver. The French courts decided as much. I suppose it's just very easy for us to make knee-jerk responses to this kind of thing. It really doesn't bother me, especially at this distance, and since they blacked out the images of Diana.
I think it's saddening that her sons will never be able to move on from this. Would it really matter how "tasteful" the photographs and such were if that was your mothers last minutes being plastered on the TV? Some how I doubt it... They should just let her rest, her sons pleaded for them not to show the footage, and I think going against that is more than disrespectful.
So many different shades of "tasteful".. I wonder if the "blacking out" was a rush job in response to the uproar. Maybe we didn't see the version they hoped to put out..
No - they were never going to show uncensored images. I watched it out of curiosity to see if it was as good as the commisioning editor was making it out to be. I have to say it was rubbish. His reason for commisioning the programme was to clear up the myth that the press had something to do with it and that they were in the way of the medics. It was clarified a LONG time ago that they were NOT in the way of the medics or those that came to there aid. There was a report about that. Challenged by that - he said that he wanted to tell the ''facts'' to the people who where not aware of it. Dragging it out for a hour was just OTT. There was no need to do that. Neither was there ANY need to to show the pictures - absolutely no need for that at all. The majority of the documentary just highlighted how goulish and money grabbing the media is.
Yes it was a pretty rubbish and pointless documentary. I understand all the objections, but it's really not as bad as people are making out. This is one of the biggest news stories of the past half century, if there are photos of the event they are going to be seen - and all the photos used have already been published elsewhere. It's massive news, and it's eminently of historical interest. It's unreasonable to think that these photos wouldn't become public property sooner or later. Yes, it's not nice for those connected to the deceased, but frankly it's just not their decision to make. The public Diana was public property, the private Diana is theirs to remember. I'd suggest they don't watch it, but we can't start censoring history on the basis of personal sentiment.
No I do not think it was as bad as some people make it out to be. The point [for me] was that those pictures could easily have been removed. Now - we can type a few words into google and view all the sordid pictures of her we like. I just did and they are vile. Regardless of how they were pixelated it still would be as horrific to a large proportion of the public. Just judging the response on the C4 website highlights that. Maybe they could have opened up a debate about it BEFORE they went ahead and aired the programme. They seem to be very proud of the programme even though to my mind - it was just a attempt to remove any blame from the media. I do get your point. I was thinking why show it !. Then I was watching newsnight - about ''carbon trading''. I learnt a lot from that - so the final anaylsis might be - they had a right to show it. Some would be interested in this - it would make the whole incident more lucid for some people. It was just imho not done very well.
They're doing it again! The Big Brother race remark didn't get broadcast "as it happened", and despite evicting the woman responsible in a rush, they still plan to show her making her comment at 10pm tonight... They really do show anything that gives them the ratings they want...
I don't mind being television being disrespectful - I have less than 0% respect for the Royals anyway. I do, however, get tired of seeing this story crop up again and again. I accept that idiocy in this country places it in the 'public interest', but if I wanted a dose of the Daily Dianna, I'd read the Daily Express....
is it as disrespectful as when Diana used National Television to tell everyone that she'd cheated on her husband? funny ol' thing the media.... nobody has ever really used it succesfully....
Er, by what standards are you judging that? The standard that everything that has Royals in is "omg mega news"? Am I the only person that just DOESN'T CARE? People die in car crashes from drunk driving all the time. Families are broken up. It's a damn shame and a tragedy. But suddenly cause she marries Prince Bigears, it's national fucking news. Plus it was 10 damn years ago, get some NEW news already.
