so its almost time to decide whether or not we are gonna be able to make it home this year. finances an time off are not a issue, however our critters are. the problem is who will take care of our goats, pig, cats, dog, chickens and 2 acres of gardens while we are gone? the gardens can be let go except for harvesting what needs to be harvested, but the animals have to be fed an watered twice a day. im sure we aint the only phamily to have had this problem. any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated as we would love to make it home this year. love n light
I'll run this by the Boss With More Than Three Teeth. We were kinda thinking you were gonna do a July 4 thing therem and we'd come down...
well to be honest it looks like we will wind up not going to the annual. i cant see payin someone for 2 weeks to take care of things around here and pay gas and take the time off of work. so yeah we will be here. as far as our gathering here, it aint rained here in over a month,we just had a 1000 acres burn not 5 miles from here, they have a total burn ban goin on here. so it would be a propane an lantern type gatherin unless the weather breaks. which is fine by us,we still got the lost kitchen, folks just have to chip in for propane. thats another thing,we just a week or so ago finally got time here with no'one but us. so we been takin a breather. havent even thought about contacting anyone or announcing anything yet.. but yeah,, im sure someone will show, they always do. love n light
Yeah, that whole critter thing keeps us home, too. We can get away for a few close by weekend things, but getting to an annual has been a pipe dream for the last decade. We've just built a new cabin on our place and are looking at a caretaker. We hope to find the right person to live rent free in exchange for help on the 'stead. Little work would required during most of the year with a couple of three or four week periods where thay would take care of it all. Easier said than done.
Off course you'll find people to house sit... Just ask around... If it was in Europe, I'd be on your doorstep already...
i am sure we can find just some random person to come and take care of things,,, question is how much stuff will they steal or wreck in process... cynical n negative,, possibly,,, but honestly how many here have actually had to find someone you could trust with your home, belongings and the things that are or will become your income makers... we have aloud so called brothers n sisters to come for thelast four years here n can honestly say that most of them leave with shit that isnt theres and most dont give a rats ass about our produce or animals therefore take care of nothing in the manner that would be sufficient, even after being shown several times,,,, and no it aint just kids or young folks,,, we have had the gammut of folks here... unfortunately bevertje we arent in europe where caretaking etc is a popular and form of vacationing and living even....
dilligaf, unfortunately you are realistic and not cynical and negative. Sure you can find someone "willing" to watch things, but no one cares like those who have put in the time effort and money to made a homestead. The last brother we had watch our place for 4 days did fine until the last day when he went a partying and didn't make it back to feed the woodstove. We got home to a 35 below frozen house.
maybe we should just swap homesteads for a couple weeks free.... least we know the responsibility n care it takes in order to keep things running on an even keel then when we are thru we can meet in middle somewhere n have dinner n drums
nearest i can figure,, somewhere tween glacier national park an Calgary B.C. be the middle,, dependin on where in alaska you be....
Not sure if u remember me or not but I'm in GA now. I can't remember waht part of ga your in but if it's close me and kid-bops would love to feed for ya, if you liked. But any-who let me know if your intersted. We're in Walton county if thats close.
yeah i remember you.. your about 2 hours from here. so ya would probably have to stay here. they get fed 2 times a day,6:30 am and 4 pm. also ya would have to go an pump water from the pond at least once. the greenhouse needs to be watered once a day(mornings) an sprayed once a day(evenings) an gardens need to be watered at least once a week. so it would be a couple trips to the pond. the bottom garden has a pump set up,the top will have to be watered from the water tank. also we will have baby chicks, so there temps will need to be monitered an they will need plenty of water. should any of the goats escape (an they probably will)youll need to round them up an get them back in there pen(should only take a hour or two,but they must be in there pen before dark due to predators). if there fence needs mending that will need to be done as well. any vegtables that are ripe will need to be harvested, an the dogs an cats will need watered an fed daily.. other than that there aint much to be done.. if your serious lemme know
OH sorry bub I thought you where a bit closer, I wouldn't be able to stay cause of the whole work thing. Sorry, didn't mean to get your hopes up. Good luck thougth. And if you do have something at the farm let us know, we've only been here a few months and havn't met a whole bunch of "folk".
hahahahhaha,, tellem turnup.. couldnt ya see him high centered at the gate???? as far as where calgary is,, i stand corrected,, i knew it was one of them provinces tho... n-e way,, weve about lost hope on a critter sitter. maybee we will get lucky at katuahs solstice?? pfft.. yeah right....
