    One more thing.

According to the original texts, the separation of castes is NOT according to birth, it is according to ability. Even thouhg born in a brahmin household, you might in fact be a shudra at heart. And what is more, there is nothing greater or inferior about any caste.

In purusha suktam it is said that in the cosmic form (virata purusha) the head is the brahmins, the arms are kshatriyas, the thighs are the vaishyas and the feet are the shudras. And finally, is it not the feet of the lord that we prostrate before?

Have no thought that just by being born in a brahmin fmily you are superior to others.

I never implicated in any way whatsoever that Brahmins were superior to anyone. For a person as smart as you, you interpret many things incorrectly.

I said it was customary for all Bengali Brahmin males to get the upanayana but that should not stop anyone from getting it if they choose. Everyone is equal in my eyes

And also your stating that other mantras can be no less effective that the Brahma Gayatri is your opinion. Others may agree or disagree from personal experience.

So please stop making your posts about this religion and other's customs so bold and brash. This is not the proper manner to debate. The way you speak makes you seem like you think you are the foremost authority on Hindusim.

    Jai Guru

It seems to me that what Bhaskar is saying is that there is a big difference between ritual observance and essential truth. The details of rituals etc. are not so important - it is the inner consciousness that counts.

Also, she is correct in saying that the caste system in modern India is a degradation of the original system of Varashrama - Dharma. Realization is not dependent on birth, social status or ritual, but on the sincere aspiration of the seeker after truth.
Please - let's not turn this into another 'flame' thread -

    Haribol!

Actually it is customary for all brahmin males to get this upanayana. This upanayana marks the start of one's education and one's beginning journey to gain knowledge of the supreme.

It is very sacred in that it is necessary for brahmins to go through this before marriage. However, it is not mandatory to go through such a ritual to achieve liberation.

I don't think it is in our power to say what is right or wrong/or if thinking of all mantras the same is right or wrong, but one thing is right, and that is, if you wish to liberate yourself, then you need to follow the path of gyan or follow the path of bhakti , both of which lead to one source.

May we all succeed in the path that we choose for ourselves. :)
