I have decided that I belong in CO. I'm planning on moving out there once I get my teaching degree, which is in 1.5 years. I've been to Denver and Boulder. Are there any other places worth living at that are vegetarian and maybe even vegan friendly? I'm tired of the east coast.
Our family is moving to the San Luis Valley this fall. I am going down there next week to buy some property. Cheap place to get property surrounded by beauty!
really? Good luck with that! well i'm planning to get a small apartment because it'll most likely just be me who is moving out there. Once I establish myself, then i'll buy some land. The beauty of CO overwhelmed me last summer. I just knew that I need to be there. Also, I have been told that the schools out there are very progressive, so I'll be the right type of person to teach there. Yesterday I checked to see if my teaching certification in PA would transfer to CO and it will! Now I have to start planning logistics. I need to figure out where abouts I should move, what type of car I should get, and the cost of living. I have only been to Boulder, Denver, and the town where nationals were last year (i can't remember the name of the town at the moment). Also, I would like to visit during the winter days to experience the snow and whatnot before I get into it when i move there.
How about living in a mountain town? I live in super little town called Fraser (right next to winter park) and half of my friends are veggies. Every day I wake up in awe just looking at the mountains surrounding me 369 degrees. Although I did hear differently about the schools in Colorado. But I never attended a school here so I wouldnt know. Its also super cheap out here.
Bumble that was Steamboat Springs (basically) and it is EXPENSIVE. Fraser, the refrigerator of America! an ex hipforumer is looking to rent out a place in Nederland. Easy commute to Boulder, including a bus route.
^^^ yea and the town next to me...tabernash is the icebox of the country. theres only some 27 days that theres not frost in the morning. but it gets super warm during the day. sometimes a bit windy. it snowed 2 days ago! now its bright and sunshine!
Oh and yes steamboat is going through a huge change with intrawest buying the ski resort, its going to get even more expensive. and mainstream. icky.
I heard nothing but wonderful things about Nederland. One of my friends around here in Philly has a friend in Nederland who is a preschool teacher. When would this person be looking to rent the place? Oh yes, Steamboat Springs..lol how could have I forget? Yes, things were mad expensive there. I stopped to get food after we left the gathering and I paid a lot for a veggie hoagie!
i say nederland. if you like the outdoorsy life, definately check out somewhere in the mountains.. it is so beautiful here its just amazing. everyone is so nice and its really easy to commute to town, you can even ride ur bike down to town if you want to, boulder's really bike friendly or the buses are good too.. peace and love, if you ever need anything, let me know
ft. collins and surrounding areas. the people are spectacular, the town is beautiful, the city is healthy and fun.
so I just received feedback from the CO department of Ed and my PA teacher certification is transferable to CO! I am not surprised Apparently they need a lot of special ed teachers in the Boulder County School District.
I lived in CO for 9 yrs. and loved it. I was in Boulder and the surrounding area, and was just blown away by the environment, friendly people, etc. Unfortunately, it was pretty expensive too, but my overall experience was positive. Fort Collins was/is a great place too; I had friends that I visited up there a lot, and some other friends that are living there now. Good luck, whatever you do!
anywhere on the front range is really uber cool. If you like college towns, then Ft Collins and Boulder are for you, Night life is always going strong. Anywhere that I have been seems to be friendly to any type of lifestyle and extremely progressive. Art and music scenes are actually encouraged. There are some rednecks, just like everywhere else, but they are few and far between and just seem to be ignored for the most part. Personally, I like Longmont because it's close enough to Boulder and Ft Collins to go and visit but I'm a little too old to hang with the college kids anymore.
I will live near a college/university because I want to go to grad school. Thanks! 19 months until I leave PA! I sooo can't wait. I need a new group of friends and a change in atmosphere. I will be visiting this summer. I need to visit during the winter, but it is too cold to be camping in a tent. well at least for me!
I've lived in Nederland, Boulder, Denver, and surrounding areas. Ned was my favorite, and it still feels like a little hippy mountain town to me. Would LOVE to move back one day. It IS getting hard to ignore all the more well off people moving into the area, but then again, money or not, they wouldn't move to Ned if they didn't like the hippie thing at least a little bit. Way down south, by New Mexico, is Durango Colorado. It's a gorgeous area, definite hippie vibe, mountains, skiing, what-have-you near by. Probably stay out of Colorado Springs thought, it's a hub for conservatism....same goes for most of the towns toward the east from the mountains. College towns (Boulder-and by proximity Nederland and Durango) and ski towns (lots of community colleges in ski towns too=lots of young folk) are generally good. The people in the mountains are generally really happy to live where they live. LOTS of vegetarians in those areas too. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Boulder is nice, it can be hard to find affordable rent. A lot of people end up living in the surrounding towns because it is cheaper and easier to find places to rent. It is worth a little extra rent money for me to live in Boulder because I don’t like to drive in boulder you can go about everywhere on a bike or the bus so I spend the gas money I save on the extra rent. If you try to find a place before August it is much easier in August all of the collage student come back and fill up all the rentals. .
It sounds like nederland would be right up your alley. Maybe try to apply for a job prior to going there and if there are no schools hiring, trying Eldora Mtn Kids program to start. You will get a foot in the door with the local families by working with them and also a free pass. Nederland is a very laid back town, but they recently(past few years) have had some new sheriff in town that has been trying to 'clean' it up.....hence speedtraps on weekends, more cop prescence...BUT much more laid back still than the east coast for sure!!!
