    hi there,

i've always had a problem with worrying about things, ever since i was a teenager i worried. for the past year or so things have got out of hand. i've been feeling really detatched from the world & my mind, thinking i'm going mad & constantly worrying about going mad.

i suffere with these pain spots that mover around my head, i shake, get chest pains, feel sick & constanly feel tired altho i get my full 8 hours every night.

i went to the Dr who said i'm suffering from anxiety, my mind is in a highened state of awareness all the time & my mind & body arnt able to relax because i'm constanly thinking.

he told me there were many options available to me to help deal with my problems. i could be put on to short term drug use (antidepressants, i dont really want to go down this road, altho taking the drugs my help me in the short term its only glazing the problem over & not actually dealing with it).
i can go to counciling or see a psycologist but there is a long waiting list to see one.

he mentioned some self help, things that i could change in my daily life to help myself.
monitering my mood & looking out for the symptoms of anxiety before i get in to the destructive cycle, much like how asthmatics regually check there breathing.

learning to say no, say no to taking too much on so i dont have so many demands & worrying how i'm going to complete them all.

diet, eating more fresh produce & not prepacked ready meals & junk food (something i'm really bad at due to working 11 hours a day 9am-8pm & feeling exhausted). cut out caffeen, i drink lots of tea, cut down on alcohol, stop smoking.

exercise, exercise can help release some of the tension that builds up and can fuel the anxiety & can help you relax. aerobic low impact exercise that leaves the heart slighly racing. i love swimming so i'm looking to find out where i can do lane swiming.

relaxation techniques, tho a bit harder than the other self help as it requires practice. i dont know any relaxation techniques.
he said to try & find somewhere that does tai chi or yoga as these help focus on breathing & relaxing the mind & meditation.
tai chi is something i've wanted to do for a long time but it seems that its targeted at older people, OAPs mainley & is done during the day rather than at night or on a weekend.
i'm looking to do yoga & although i have seen people stood in yoga positions before, i really have no idea what it is about.
i've tried to meditate before & i couldnt stop thinking, i couldnt clear my mind.
i've found a yoga class on a sunday afternoon but i'm quite anxious about going because the woman on the reception at the sports centre couldnt give me any info about it. she said to just turn up.
some people have sugested buying a yoga DVD & doing it at home but i dont think this is a good idea as you havent got anyone there to say wether your doing it correctly or not.

can anyone give my some info, try & put my mind at rest about going to the class & wether anyone who's suffered with anxiety issues before wether yoga has helped them.

sorry for such a long post but i really do need some help & if yoga is the way to go then yay.

I have that same problem and although I don't want to see anybody else going thru it, it's nice to see I'm not alone. I've started doing yoga at home. Does it help?? That I can't tell you right now, it takes time. I do know that cutting coffee out and drinking more tea has helped quite alot. And so has changing my eating habits. I wish you luck on your path. If I notice anything different due to the changes I've made I will let you know. :)

Anxiety is something I'm quite familiar with. For me, "finding god" really helped. I read this book called Be Here Now by Baba Ram Dass. You'll love it... if you read it with an open mind and an open heart, it will take such a burden off your mind and body. As you can expect, the book teaches you not to worry about the past, not to worry about the future, and simply to be here now... Simply become absorbed in the present moment, love the present moment, accept the present moment... monitor your thoughts, let go of your silly cravings. All of this helps tremendously. And of course, meditation is a big part of the book. Meditation or, even more simply, mindful breathing can be a great tool for just taking a step back, relaxing, and realizing that there is nothing to worry about, it's all in your head, as cheesy as that sounds.

Good luck to ya, anxiety is no fun but now that you've acknowledged it and decided to do something about it, I'm sure you'll feel better soon :) If you wanna talk more feel free to PM

I'm a yoga teacher & have worked one-on-one with students who have anxiety issues. Yoga can definitely help. I understand your anxiety about joining a group class. I'd suggest you search your area for ALL classes & then see if you can have a conversation with each teacher to determine who might be most suited to your needs. You want someone who is compassionate & someone with whom you feel comfortable. Let them know about your fears. Take a free introductory class if available & to see if the class & teacher are suited to you. Consider private instruction if available & affordable. Check out: yogafinder.com and Yoga Alliance on line for teachers in your area..

I like chanting, it becomes like singing. Maybe Green Tara mantra for you.

Two words...brainwave entrainment. It's life changing. I spent years trying to meditate, but could never seem to clear the mind chatter, which was really the main cause of my anxiety. I now incorporate it in my business. Google. The results are immediate and dare I say again...life changing. Binuaral Beat entrainment is a weak form of entrainment and not that effective. Look for the Isochronic technology. It'll only cost you about $20.00 per CD and well worth the small investment.

Yoga helps a lot I think.

It helps to have raw food nutrition and certain nutritional components that combat anxiety too (omega 3, good fats, high magnesium foods, good supplements, b vitamins, etc..)

There is an e-book on how yoga intertwines with relaxation and stress relief here that looks really good - http://gocheck.yogamed1.hop.clickbank.net/

Best of luck, and know that absolutley anything is 100% curable if your truly committed to healing it ;)

I use to be in a similar situation. While at the time I was not trying to get over my anxiety directly, atleast consiously, I made pretty much all the changes you have mentioned and think they all have helped a lot. Yoga and meditation will definitely help your body and mind relax.

Diet is important. You are what you eat. :) Eating healthy, fresh, unprocessed foods will be a lot better for you. I also suggest trying to cut out, or atleast cut back on, meat and dairy.

I also highly recommend reading The Power of Now. This book has probably had the most positive effect on me. It shows you how to use the mind instead of letting the mind use you by constanting thinking and making judgements. Live in the now where all actions take place, where life is happening. Past and future are only illusions that your mind likes to dwell on but you can really do nothing about. It is fairly simple yet very powerful.

I hope you have been making progress. I wish you the best. :)

Yoga is great for anxiety. I started doing yoga to try to regain a spiritual connection. Anusara is the type of yoga taught where I go. There are several types, you will probably want to see what type different places around you teach and try classes at more than one place. The idea of doing a private session is good. I took my nephew for one and it really helped him. It gave him a workout to do on his own and more comfortable going to a class.
